Can I just use a 6 inch memory foam on a platform bed or do I need an actual mattress?

Memory foam is a comfort layer and therefore needs to be placed on top of a support layer. It should be layered over a firm HD, HR or latex core. Most mattresses use 2" to 5" of memory foam layered over a 4" to 8" core. So to answer your question, no you can’t use a 6" memory foam on a platform bed.
