Mattresses causing me pain

For the past decade, mattresses have been causing me back pain - I wake up and after an hour or two it goes away. I’m a side sleeper, 220 Lbs

I guess I need a soft mattress?

I tried luxury firm saatva and now am on a sleeponLatex with a topper - it’s dunlop so I’m guess if I went latex I’d need talalay…

I’m scared of foam. and hammock syndrome — please recommend a good queen sized mattress for just me - all I care about is waking up without pain

Hi django.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Sorry to hear about the back pain you’ve been experiencing on mattresses. Thanks for sharing your sleeping position and weight with us. Would you mind also sharing your height?

Maybe, maybe not. There are many variables and factors that go into selecting a mattress that best fits your needs and preferences. In your case, I’d say studying first our Mattress Durability Guidelines could go a long way in helping you understand why you may be experiencing back pain. This often has to do with the durability and quality of the materials in a mattress that are likely not a match for your sleeping position and BMI.

It’s also important to understand your sleeping position as well.

What has your experience been on these mattresses? Are there things you like, and things you don’t like? Is the pain you’re experiencing the same on both mattresses, or does it vary in degree and position (upper, mid, lower back?)

Not all foams are for everyone. That’s okay! And we definitely want to help guide you towards a mattress that will eliminate your pain and bring you your best night’s sleep.

As a rule, there are too many unknowns, variables, and personal preferences involved in choosing a mattress for someone else. If you are willing to share your height and also a little more about your back pain, as well as the layer specifications of any mattresses you are considering, I’d be happy to offer a commentary on how that mattress best aligns with your specs and in relation to the Durability Guidelines.

Should you choose to continue independent research, I would highly recommend a detailed phone conversation with knowledgeable and experienced retailers or manufacturers like those you’ll find in our Trusted Member Directory, and they can help “talk you through” the specifics of their mattresses and the properties and “feel” of the materials they are using to best fit your specific needs.
