Med firm or soft for scoliosis with arthritis in australia

Hi I have tested 3 layer latex hybrid both as a soft and as a medium. I am wondering whether I need medium plus soft 5cm topper. My scoliosis seems to need the med and even my past firm mattress but now the arthritis needs less pressure and a soft. Worried that soft will not provide adequate spinal alignment. Am in Australia and so far have only found quokka beds., who promote your website. They have ventured in hybrid. Am looking at their hybrid. Thankyou for any tips. I am 50kg. I also sleep with knee pillows for alignment.

Hi Sjane.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Sorry to hear you’re in a bit of a pickle! Soft can definitely still be supportive, so there’s that.

Is the arthritis also in your back, or are you facing other pressure points? I am assuming you are a side sleeper?

Thankyou, very glad to hear that soft can be supportive. I start on my back but invariably go to side sleep. Side sleep puts pain where hip bones are and down right leg. I use cushions to align. Dimples in mattress don’t work! This is a fab site and the info the best ever. I just bought an Englander mattress, made in Australia, medium, all kinds of pain now…lower back tail bone pain and shoulder blades and right hip area. I know they need breaking in. possibly going to remove the top and replace with organic latex. I have a different brand one coming hybrid with organic latex that one is soft and has sleep trials. That’s from a firm that links to this website but is Australian. Will see whether to switch to medium with soft topper if it’s too soft. How do we know if too soft?

Hi Sjane  I have a mattress factory in Sydney. I’ve been fitting people to mattress and making mattress for over a decade.

Some people have a large range of what will work for them, they can “sleep on anything”.

Some people have a small range of what will work for them. For you, you have a very small range if what will work. This makes it very difficult to get it right.

When you say this “I know they need breaking in.” I worry. I never tell people this. I don’t think it’s right. It should feel comfy right away.

Also, “Worried that soft will not provide adequate spinal alignment”. If a “soft” mattress is required to align your spine and reduce pressure points, then a “soft” mattress is what you need. Some people have very straight backs and a soft will hurt them. I have solved many problems like yours with “soft” mattresses.

If you are ordering mattress off the internet, (I think that’s what you are doing") you can think of it like throwing darts in the dark. You may get it on the board, but getting a bullseye will be nearly impossible. Trying mattresses first doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s like turning the lights on before throwing your dart. You are just increasing the chance of getting it right.

If you get really stuck, and depending where you live, you can try my system. I have modular components, so you can think of it like throwing the dart, in the light, but you can take the dart of the board and keep throwing it as many times as you like to get a bullseye.

Not trying to plug my product I swear, just saying that it’s a difficult problem to solve, and if you are in pain, I may possibly be able to help you. Where do you live?
