I am interested in adding a horsetail topper to a ViSpring mattress. I love the support and feel I get from my mattress but I do like a slightly more luxurious feel of a high end hotel bed which tend to use toppers. So my goal is to add a more luxurious feel while still staying cool and supported.
I am a hot sleeper and my ViSpring sleeps cool and comfortable which I know some toppers do not. I am considering horsetail toppers as these supposedly have good air flow. I’ve slept in a Hastens 2000T before and truthfully didn’t love the sleeping “in” vs. “on” feeling of a normal mattress but their BJX luxury topper might be a good fit.
Moosburger also makes a nice horsetail topper which has removable elements so that it is easy to clean and repair as individual pockets compress and wear out.
Does anyone have experience with Moosburger toppers? I wont by able to try one before buying. It is about half the price of the Hastens and the construction is different being that it is just a cotton cover over horsetail vs horsetail in the middle of a cotton and wool layer.
The other option is the ViSpring toppers. I would imagine these would sleep hotter as they use the smallest amount of horsetail.
To me the Moosburger is the best value being that you get pure horsetail with moveable elements that are completely washable. I know ViSpring uses Moosburger horsetail in their highest end mattress vs South American horsetail in their cheaper mattresses.
Moosburger vs Hastens are going to feel quite different indeed. Also, I was told by one manufacturer that many fabricators like have the horsetail encased in layers of cotton or wool as otherwise one would “hear” the horsetail when the person in bed is shifting on top of it. That statement is unconfirmed though, and either way, it is possible that the layers of cotton fabric that Moosburger is using is enough to insulate the sound.
I would recommend thinking more about what this “luxurious” feel is that you desire. The Moosburger should feel very springy and not plush, I would think. Would that feel luxurious to you? Also, I would think the firmness of your current mattress is probably the best indicator of whether you will sleep “on” or “in” the Hastens Topper.
I would not pay too much attention to country of origin for horsehair. Even Moosburger gets a portion of it from China. Does Hastens itself only get theirs from Sweden? Doubtful.
Welcome to The Mattress Underground ! Thanks for your question.
Congrats on your new horsetail topper shopping adventure ! Yes, if you prefer adding a bit more of a luxurious feel to your mattress, a quality horsetail topper could provide that for you. Thanks for including the pics of the toppers that you’re considering as they are a helpful point of reference for conversation.
For other consumers who may be following your research, horsetail hair is one of the more common natural fibers used as a mattress component and is highly durable. Its use continues to be a popular in bespoke mattress design, as well as in mattresses and accessories in other countries. You may find this Phoenix post regarding Hästens’ horsetail hair toppersan interesting read.
Mooseburger’s BIOCEN MA-RS topper with its individual “elements” is an intriguing design. Regardless of either one that you choose, horsetail hair toppers require additional care steps to prevent compression of the material inside of its channeling, which can firm up the feel of the topper. Regular fluffing, flipping, rotating, and airing of the topper should help keep material compressions to a minimum.
There are several consumers who are fairly active on the forum and have commented on the above mentioned Phoenix post. I am going to test out the Hastens and ViSpring options on my mattress in store and hopefully one of them will give me the right feel. It sounds like pure horsehair might not feel luxurious on its own.
I tried the Hastens BJX Luxury and all three Vispring toppers. I found that I liked the Vispring Heaven Luxury (their middle model) the best…this was the closest of the 4 I tested to that hotel bed feel I was looking for.
The Hastens wasn’t that soft or luxurious in my opinion. The Vispring Heaven Luxury Supreme (their top of the line with horsehair) was very firm.
Congrats on the showroom visits ! Glad to hear that you had access to comparing all of the horsetail hair toppers that you have interest in. Excellent news on the Vispring Heaven Luxury topper, it should pair nicely with your Vispring Regent mattress. The Heaven Luxury topper does not contain horsetail hair, does it? Is it wool and cotton only?
It seems you are confirming the overall opinion that horsetail hair toppers are firmer feeling, generally speaking. Thanks for sharing your comparison notes with the forum as there is always some curiosity on this subject . Are you closer to deciding now or still shopping?
Yep it is only “British fleece wool, blended British wool and cotton”.
I did order the Vispring Heaven Luxury topper. I am not sure Vispring toppers are a good value considering the simplicity of topper but being the same brand it should be a nice match with my mattress.
Hi. I just took delivery of a Gardner Ultra Luxe Mattress which is supposed to approximate the Haasten in construction. Guess I’ll be needing a topper because this is a firm mattress! Shoulder and lower back NOT happy after first night. Thoughts on your Heaven Luxury wool and cotton topper?
