More confused than ever

This has only made me more confused. I was ready to pull the plug on a dreamcloud luxe, until i started reading stuff on this website. Now i am possibly leaning toward the titan plus elite. But another post has me thinking about the pocket spring 8" QuadCoil with Firm Sides, The QuadMini Luxury Layer, 3" latex topper and a Premium DIY Stretch Cover. I just don’t know what is going to serve me better

I am 5’8" 270lb side sleeper and have been sleeping on a old box spring with innerspring mattress and 3" memory foam mattress topper for last 20 years with a spouse. I am in the process of a divorce and she took the bed, so i am temporarily sleeping on the ground on a $300 full medium hybrid bed in a box from lowes with my 3" memory foam topper. I don’t wake up with pain so much, but i want to make sure i don’t end up buying something that causes pain because i have enough problems sleeping as it it ( sleep apena with cpap, and the stress of divorce) also having to take sleeping medication (lunesta)

I have the quadcoil with quadmini, 2" latex and the cotton stretch cover. It feels good, i can say that it’s harder to move around than an already put together bed and the price ends up being $1400 for the full build. Honestly, i think if i were to do diy again with the cover i would choose a bamboo wool cover instead.

I have 3 mattresses including the diy build, and if i could do it over again i wouldve just started with the nest and wild hybrid for under 1000 for a queen using the current discount, with a well built platform, and stopped buying anything else.

Their standard hybrid has the 15.5g quadcoil, though they have another option that has the stronger 14.75g to support your weight. Just type “Escape version with 14.75g springs” in the order notes and that’s what they’ll send you.

Hi Davism,

I honestly do not think there is much comparison between the DreamCloud Luxe and the Titan Plus Elite when you start looking beyond surface comfort and marketing language. In terms of build quality, durability, foam density, and overall support design, the Titan Plus Elite is simply built to be a far more robust mattress, especially for someone at 270 pounds. The support system is stronger, the materials are generally more substantial, and it is designed with higher body weights in mind rather than trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience through soft showroom comfort. It does offer a cooler mattress profile with its microcoils in the comfort layer, and will offer a size sleeper a very nice body hug, which good support holding you up. Sitting edge support may not review the true meaning of edge support, which is when you are lying on the edge of the bed, that the Titan offers.

Of course, comfort itself is always subjective, and almost any company can make a mattress feel impressive during a quick 10 minute showroom test or the first few nights at home. The real question is how the mattress performs after months and years of use once the comfort materials begin to settle and your body is spending eight hours a night on it. That is where material quality, density and proper support become much more important than flashy marketing or luxury branding.

As for the DIY setup you mentioned with the QuadCoils, QuadMini layer, latex topper, and stretch cover, that route can absolutely produce an excellent mattress, but it also requires a willingness to experiment and fine tune. For some people that process is enjoyable because they like having complete control over the feel and construction. For others, especially during an already stressful period of life, it can become overwhelming and lead to constant second guessing. There is also no guarantee you will get the layering exactly right on the first try. If taking that route, you really want to work with someone like @DIYMattress, @Sleep_EZ or @Arizona_Premium to walk you though the steps so you get it right, combining some latex in the mix to increase the durability and structure of the complete set up.

Given everything you mentioned including your weight, side sleeping, sleep apnea, stress levels, and just wanting dependable sleep without creating new pain issues, I personally think there is value in keeping things simpler and focusing on a mattress specifically designed to support larger body types from the start. The Titan Plus Elite may not be the “sexiest” choice from a marketing standpoint, but from a practical standpoint it makes far more sense to me than the DreamCloud for your situation. You can always fine tune comfort later with a topper if needed, but it is much harder to fix a mattress that lacks proper support underneath.

Finally, I have to mention, support from a foundation. To be on the safe side, look for a foundation that the slats or less than 3" spaced, 2-3" wide and 3/4" thick, that offers NO flex and remains quite rigid. Something to look at that exemplifies this is the @MattressFoundations Terra foundation or Bunkie. They make a great foundation, and you want to use them as your benchmark.

Hope this helps put everything into perspective.

Maverick,
Thanks for the advice. I ended up going with the titan plus elite. The bed that i bought has wooden slats but i don’t know what the spacing is just yet as it is supposed to be delivered today. It appears to have 10 slats so i may be good. However, to be on the safe side I went ahead and bought a bunkie board. The titan isn’t bad. I would say it offers good support. Fortunately, I didn’t let the wife take the 3" tempur-pedic cooling mattress topper as this offers just the right amount of support and comfort i was looking for in combination with the titan elite

10 slats are typically not a lot, usually 17-20 will create under 3" spacing, depending on the width of the slats, but the bunkie should be fine.

I am surprised you wife would not find the comfort layer on the titan elite cushy and comfy. Although i am 220 so most things feel softer to me. But my wife is 135 and for side sleeping when she uses that guest room mattress to read her book and fall asleep, she loves it. Then again, she hated our Tempurpedic 3" topper. Hated it with extra passion, lol. Felt stuck and could not move.

Everyone has their own thing, but that elite is quire comfortable for long term use.

Best if luck with it.
