Hey everyone, looking for some insight on my DIY progression.
I started with a full 12" all-latex stack and quickly realized it wasn’t working out. I swapped to an 8" Texas Pocket Springs (14.75g QuadCoil) support unit in an 11" stretch cover, with 3" of medium latex on top as my comfort layer.
I’m 5’7", ~195 lbs with a pretty muscular frame (broad shoulders/chest), and I sleep mostly on my back.
Even with the spring base, I’m starting to think latex as a comfort material just isn’t for me. The “push-back” surface tension feels unyielding and rigid, and I can’t quite get comfortable.
I’m considering ditching the latex entirely and moving to a 3" TPS QuadMini microcoil unit, possibly topped with 1" of a fast-response polyfoam (like Serene or Energex) for pressure relief without the heat retention of memory foam.
A couple of questions for those who have built coil-on-coil setups:
Has anyone with a heavier/muscular build made the jump from latex to QuadMinis on back sleeping? Did it give enough contouring without causing your hips to hammock?
How does a QuadMini + thin polyfoam topper combo compare in feel to latex or traditional foam for pressure point relief?
Would love to hear thoughts from anyone who ditched latex in favor of microcoils!
Great questions here. I see you’re looking for feedback from people who have swapped from latex to microcoils, so I’ll leave the floor open for them and maybe some of our experts will chime in as well!
I commented on your other post but I’ll add more thoughts. I am 6’0 215lb currently with a 30 inch waist. So I do have a muscular upper body. My exact DIY setup is the 14.75g, quadmini, and a 2" super soft layer of latex+memory hybrid foam.
I tried laying on the 14.75g base on its own with a layer of latex and I did not like it. It was way too firm. It’s a little softer than the floor and I would only recommend that on its own to someone who is 250+ pounds.
The quadmini brings that overall firmness down some, adds a lot of great conformity without being so responsive like latex, and is still very supportive.
Then all you need is a layer to cover the feel of the coils. My layer was a one-off chance that I bought from a bed manufacturer so it’s not available for the public, but I assume hypurgel from DIYREM.com would feel very similar.
Serene foam has a very slow response rate similar to high density slow response memory foam, except it’s more breathable.
Hypurgel from what I have read is in between latex and memory foam so it gives contouring and is not over responsive like latex can be, yet is faster recovering and responsive than memory foam.
2" is the sweet spot imo. 3" takes away from the contouring ability of the quadmini too much.
This setup of 2" soft foam into the 3" quadmini and 8" firm springs gives a great balance of pressure relief and support.
With 2" of hypurgel-like 14 ild foam, 3" quadmini and 14.75g quadmini, the build still feels very strong and “firm” yet I sleep fantastically on it and have no issues with sinkage. I am a back and side sleeper and have no issues on my back.
You are a legend I bought a 1inch serene foam from DIYrem and a one inch wool mattress protector from Amazon. I’m going to try this over the latex. I did add a 2inch tempur topper I have in storage for camping and man the latex is just aggressive. I’m truly wondering if the quad mini will give me a lifted on top the mattress feeling without assaulting me. I can’t have my hips sink really at all. I swapped the medium 3in for the soft 3 in just now and it lit up my sacrum like a firework
In your case what you are doing there might work better. You do need a little softness but less before you reach support than average. It is true, latex is really busy. That is a very preferential feel. Some just don’t like it. The quadmini holds up your body well but for me does not collapse in the same way as foam. Good luck on your build
I’m starting to think the quad mini is the way to go with maybe a couple inches of something on top outside the cover maybe in its own topper cover I really appreciate you taking the time
