Mr. & Mrs. Goldilocks buy a mattress

We went up to Spindle Mattress in Acton MA today & played Goldilocks… sleeping on all the mattresses to find the one that was juuust right.

Neal chatted with us for a bit, then went back to his work (outside of the showroom), leaving us to try mattresses.

Mr. Goldilocks felt that he could sleep on any of them, except the Xtra Firm, and that the other three were so much better than our current Very Firm futon that the difference between them was insignificant.

I liked both the Soft & the Medium. I think that we were subtly discouraged from the Soft (possibly due to our size / weight – 6’ 210 lbs & 5’8" 190 lbs). Neal did explain all about how their mattresses will get a bit “softer” w/ age, and about loss of height, etc.

He also suggested that since I had liked the Dux bed, that I might like a topper. The Soft topper ontop of the Medium Abscond seemed very comfy. But the plain Medium is also quite comfy.

We ultimately decided to get just the Medium Abscond… and we can always easily add the Soft topper at a later date if we feel we (I) would like it for comfort. (Waiting a bit also lets the bank balance recover…)

Neal graciously let us buy is right then, which meant that he filled out the online form (instead of us going home & buying online). That way we got it ordered. Since we live so close, and since it’s been so long since I’ve had a good night’s sleep, they are going to call us when it’s ready (they are expecting a shipment of the firm that is the bottom layer) & we can drive up and pick it up (so as to not have to wait for it to get processed through UPS)

Thank you for your help and suggestions (and for this site!) We maybe should have shopped more, but this was about the amout of shopping that Mr. Goldilocks is good for. The mattress seems to fit the bill for comfort, and at a good price point.

Now I’m off to order a coir under pad for breathability between the mattress and our (solid masonite) platform bed.

Mrs. Goldilocks

Hi dragons4Mama,

Thanks for taking the time to share your comments and feedback and for letting us know what you ended up deciding.

As you know … I (and many other members of the site that have purchased there) think very highly of Neal and Spindle.

Given the limitations of a “time constricted” husband I think you did very well and with a component mattress that is available in different firmness levels you are really comparing several mattresses all inside the same basic design. You also have the best of both worlds because you had the chance to test a mattress in person that most people end up purchasing online without being able to test it in person. As you also know … you also have some good options after your purchase to further customize your mattress based on your experience after you sleep on it by either rearranging layers, exchanging a layer, or adding a topper.

Overall … I’d say you did very well and made a great quality/value purchase!

Thanks too for the kind words … and most important of all … congratulations on your new mattress

I am so happy for your purchase and look forward to your comments after you’ve slept on it for a bit. I was doing fine until you said something about a coir under pad. Great, another search term. LOL

Hi Harriett,

You can read a bit more about rubberized coir in post #4 here and the posts it links to.

The “under pad” that dragons4Mama was referring to is the bed rug here which can be used to add airflow and ventilation under a mattress that is supported by a solid surface foundation or platform bed and it can also be used on top of a wood slat or wire grid foundation or platform bed where the gaps between the slats or the wires are a little bit too far apart to prevent the latex from sinking into the gaps.

Mr. & Mrs. Goldilocks have now slept on their new medium Spindle mattress & can report.

On Friday, Dec 19, Spindle Mattress phoned and said that we could pick up our new mattress any time after 1:30. It’s great to live close enough to them to go try the mattresses in person (we did that on Thursday the 18th) and to be able to pick the mattress up (to avoid the Holiday rush of shipping).

They do not box up mattresses for pick-up. There were 4 plastic-wrapped pieces on the loading dock: the 3 mattress layers and the mattress cover. The mattress layers were wrapped in plastic, then folded and packing-taped. The 3 pieces of latex for our king-sized mattress prettty much filled the cargo area of our Subaru Forester (back seats folded down).

When we got home Mr. Goldilocks asked me if I’d noticed anything during the drive home… and the answer was NO – no smell noticeable in the car from the mattress pieces.

Mr. Goldilocks got the fun job of rolling up the king-sized Too Firm futon and getting it down the stairs. He also carried into the house and up the stairs the pieces of the new Spindle mattress.

It did take a measuring tape to be able to discern the top from the sides of the king-sized mattress cover and the latex pieces for the mattress. Mr. Goldilocks is very patient and became quite accomplished at the flick-the-wrist to wave the latex to adjust placement of the mattress. It did take longer to get the bottom layer positioned than it did the succeeding layers. I do think that it helps to have 2 people for the zipping up: Mr. Goldilocks held & pulled the top and side of the cover together while I tucked the non-woven fabric of the curtain down and did the zipping.

Right now we are sleeping with the old terry-cloth mattress pad that came with our Duxiana bed turned sideways (that is Queen-sized), so the head and foot are at the sides, with the sides down from the head of our king-sized mattress by a pillow’s width and up from the bottom some. (It is on the to-do list to buy a roll of wide flannel & to make my own double- or triple-layer flannel mattress pads.)

Mr. Goldilocks fell right asleep on the new medium Spindle mattress. (No different, really. Mr. Goldilocks pretty much always falls asleep minutes after his head hits the pillow.) He did feel that he had a more restful sleep on the new mattress, with fewer wakings to turn over. Mr. Goldilocks can only sleep on his side. The Spindle mattress is soft enough to let his hips and shoulders sink in.

Mrs. Goldilocks likes that when I sit down on the Spindle mattress in preparation for getting in, it feels a bit soft (the futon we replaced was HARD. Sitting down on the futon in preparation for getting in, it felt HARD, & I always thought “this mattress is Too Hard & I won’t be able to get a good, restful night’s sleep”). The Spindle mattress is soft enough to let my hips and shoulders sink in when sleeping on my side, and it also gives good support so my spine is nicely aligned and I when I wake up from sleeping on the Spindle my numb toe / foot is not more numb than when I went to sleep (I have lingering numbness in my left foot / big toe as a result of a back injury I gave myself while gardening in Sept 2013).

We both missed our new mattress when we went to Maine for Christmas and had to sleep on the ancient and awful almost as hard as boards twin mattresses at Mr. Goldilock’s mother’s condo.

The allergy cover arrived the Monday before Christmas. The coir bed rug was waiting for us when we got back from Maine. Now that the craziness of the Holidays are over, it’s time to unmake the bed & put the coir rug under & the allergy cover on.

[Edited to add] Our new Spindle mattress has NO smell!!. Mr. Goldilocks thought that since Spindle was waiting for a shipment of the firm latex, that since the firm layer would have been the most recently poured, that it might have had some smell – but NO. Mrs Goldilocks, who has a pretty good smeller, and is sensitive to some odors, did not smell ANY “mattress” or “plastic” or “latex” odors at ALL when we took the plastic off the layers of latex. There was also NO odor that developed after sleeping on the Spindle mattress. Mrs. Goldilocks is VERY happy about the LACK of Odor!! (In contrast, the Too Firm Futon has a “futon-y” odor. Not sure if it is the materials or the fire-proofing)

All in all we are very happy with our Spindle mattress. I wish we would have found MU before we bought the Too Firm futon… We are very happy with the knowledge of the folks ate Spindle, their willingness to let us come pick it up!!, and the quality of the latex, in a cotton cover with wool batting, at a VERY reasonable price point!!

Hi dragons4Mama,

Thanks once again for taking the time to share such detailed comments and feedback … and it’s great to see that your new mattress is working out so well for you
