My Experience with Puffy Mattress So Far

Hey everyone,

I’m new to The Mattress Underground, so hopefully I’m starting this thread the right way! I’ve been sleeping on a Puffy Mattress (Queen model) for about three months now and thought I’d share my experience to get some discussion going. I ended up here after wading through a ton of mattress research online and sidestepping some dodgy Amazon listings.

I’m a side sleeper, and my lower back gets cranky sometimes. The Puffy’s medium-firm feel (I’d say a 5 or 6 out of 10) has been really nice for my hips and shoulders. It’s comfy without making me feel like I’m sinking too deep into the foam. My boyfriend, who sleeps on his back, says it keeps his back feeling supported. I move around a lot at night, and he doesn’t wake up, so the motion transfer thing’s been working out well.

The cooling tech’s pretty decent—I used to overheat on my old mattress, but this one’s much better, though not like sleeping on a glacier or anything. One small annoyance: it took a couple days to fully puff up after unboxing, which was a bit of a wait when I was excited to try it.

The 101-night trial made me feel okay about buying online, and the lifetime warranty’s a nice touch. So far, no sagging or weird indentations. I’d love to hear from others about foam mattresses in general—any tips for keeping them in good shape over time? Like, do you rotate them, use specific protectors, or anything else?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences! Thanks for any advice—this forum’s already been a goldmine for mattress info.

Hey there CozySleeper,

Congrats on your new Puffy mattress! I’m not sure which model you went with, but it’s a good idea to rotate it every three months. Puffy isn’t known for using the highest-density foams, so rotating helps extend its comfort and support over time.

On the plus side, Puffy mattresses are made in the U.S., so the foams they use are likely to be fairly consistent. What you try in a showroom will usually feel very similar to what you get at home.

One of the most important factors, both short and long term, is the foundation you’re using. Make sure it’s strong and supportive. For slatted frames, the slats should be no more than 3" apart, or ideally 2.5" if you have an all-foam Puffy. They should also be at least 5/8" thick or more, and 2–3" wide. If your setup doesn’t meet those standards, you don’t necessarily have to replace it. You can simply add a sturdy bunkie board on top. For adjustable bases, solid decking is best and you should avoid metal grid styles, especially with all-foam models.

Also, keep in mind that many manufacturers, including Puffy, may require the use of a mattress protector to maintain your warranty. Some will void it for even a small stain. To save yourself the hassle, it’s worth investing in one. Puffy sells them, but you can also find good options from Brooklyn Bedding, Malouf, Yawnder, and others.

If you have any other questions, just let me know. I’m happy to help.

Hi @CozySleeper

Thank you so much for your helpful review of the Puffy! It’s been super insightful. How’s the edge support on yours when you’re sitting on it?

It’s pretty solid for sitting—doesn’t feel like I’m sliding off, but it’s not super firm either. Works well for me as a side sleeper. Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. My parents have a queen-size Puffy, and they like it a lot—feels comfortable and supports them well. I’m considering getting a smaller one, maybe the Cloud, for my spare room. I’ve got a foam mattress too and just use a basic protector to keep it clean. How’s yours doing after a few months—still holding its shape?

Mine’s still holding up great after a few months—no sagging or dents. The Cloud sounds like a cool pick for your spare room!

Does it handle motion transfer well? I don’t want to disturb my partner when I move.

I move around a ton at night, and my boyfriend doesn’t notice, so I guess it’s fine.

You may want to consider using a weighted blanket, as many people find them helpful for improving sleep quality. They are designed to provide gentle, even pressure across the body, which can promote relaxation and reduce restlessness during the night. This calming effect may help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and reduce excess movement while sleeping. I recently tried one from Baloo Living, made with glass beads as weights. It is well-made, using high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship.

How is it still holding up for you? Any after smell from opening the box.

Mine has been great too for my side sleeping for about two years now—really helps my hips.

I pretty much gave up on finding a comfortable bed. But Puffy mattress is very comfy. I actually sleep through the night now.

I feel that. I’ve been cycling through toppers for months and nothing works. Since you’re finally sleeping through the night, does it actually stay cool? I hate waking up sweaty.

Surprisingly yeah! I was worried about the same thing because it’s foam, but it doesn’t trap heat like the old brands. It’s got a weirdly cool-to-the-touch feel.

That’s a relief. What about the “sink” factor? I need something soft but I don’t want to feel like I’m stuck in quicksand when I try to roll over.
