My experience with Sleep & Beyond Wool myTopper

After using it for a few months, I wanted to share my impressions of the Sleep & Beyond myTopper!

Essentially, it looks and feels like a duvet insert (a bit thicker than average perhaps and smaller of course because it’s just the size of the face of the bed, with no overhang). It has two 1.5" thick horizontal elastic straps to hold it onto the mattress (I found them unnecessary and too compressing to my mattress, so I cut them off - it stays perfectly still without). At first I found it a bit rustly-sounding like a new duvet insert sometimes is, but that wore off quickly. Unlike other wool toppers I have tried, it has NO SMELL WHATSOEVER!

Because of New England weather, I’ve been able to try it on both cold and hot nights, and it does a good job of temperature regulating. It was toasty to snuggle in between it and a blanket on a cold night, but miraculously, it doesn’t make me feel warmer on a hot night! It’s not cool to the touch or anything, but the effect it has is quite subtle: the absence of night sweats.

It is 1.5" inches tall as advertised after decompressing for a couple of days. (There are some sewn down parts, so maybe it’s on average a bit less.) This is not a height that is going to dramatically change the feel or firmness of your mattress, which was a bit of a disappointment to me since I tried it on both a too-firm and too-soft mattress and it didn’t really change either one. When I folded it in half to sleep on the couch, it did feel like a significant amount of (very comfortable) medium-firm cushion, but unfolded it’s pretty minimal. Ideal use case: you already like the feel of your mattress but you want the temperature regulating qualities of wool.

It is said to be washable. I haven’t done this (it’s under the sheets so it’s unlikely to get too dirty), but it gives me peace of mind to know it’s an option.

I appreciate your review of the Sleep & Beyond wool mattress protector.

Is this the 2 in 1 with washable wool and cotton cover? I had that one on my list of possible mattress protectors because it offered 100% cotton, washable New Zealand wool and seemed quite nice.

I got the myTopper which is a 1.5" topper (Shropshire wool inside a cotton casing). They also have a protector called myProtector which evidently is fitted sheet style, which I have not tried.
