We’re looking to replace a 12-year old queen mattress (innerspring/pillow top). Our main considerations are:
[ol]
[li]low toxicity (or mattress)[/li]
[li]good support for stomach sleeper with some low back pain[/li]
[li] hybrid construction[/li][/ol]
My wife is a back sleeper (60%) and side sleeper (40%). I’m mostly a stomach sleeper with some lower back pain, which I believe is mostly due to our old mattress and some core weakness. We are both 150 lbs or so. Our budget is around $1,200. Ideally, the delivery company would remove old mattress/boxspring. Having never purchased a mattress online, a free trial and return warranty is a must.
Maxm,
Based o your comments about your sleeping situation, I would point you toward sleepez. The reason is based on your sleeping arrangement. Sleepez is one of the few mattress companies that allow you to customiz each side of the bed. I don’t believe any of the other mattresses offer this unique feature. And SleepEZ’s customer service is outstanding. You can reach them on the phone most days and they are happy to recommend configurations based on your sleeping situation. They also don’t glue layers. So if your needs change in a year or two, you can always flip layers, or perhaps contact SleepEZ for additional layers if you decide you want to go softer.
I’m sure other folks, who are perhaps more knowledgeable than me will chime in. Let us know what you decide.
These are all reasonable considerations. You are heading in the right direction!
With regards to your weight and sleep styles, I would suggest (if you haven’t already) reading our Mattress Durability Guidelines and also our article on the various sleeping positions and the support needs each one requires.
Lower back pains can be often an indication of foam breakdown and mattress sag compromising a neutral spinal alignment. Soft foams in mattresses are also breaking down much faster then firmer ones. You’ll definitely be able to find something within your budget that meets both you and your wife’s needs – although you’ll need to speak directly with the various mattress companies to find out if they offer any sort of removal or recycling services for your old mattress and boxspring.
Provided that you chose the correct support/comfort balance for you and your wife are all good choices, the various mattress companies you mentioned in the title of the post all allow for in-home sleep trials, and returns (though not all will refund shipping, etc. so make sure to read those policies carefully).
My Green Mattress, Gardner, GhostBed , and SleepEZ are all Trusted
Members of our forum whom we think highly of (like all of our Trusted Members and that I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency.
My Green Mattress and SleepEZ also have dedicated forums here where you can ask them direct questions about their products and policies directly.
I highly recommend you to rely on the advice of the manufacturer themselves as they are much more familiar with their own mattress designs and materials than anyone else (including me) and they can use the information you provide them about your body type and sleeping positions, your preferences, your history on different mattresses, and the results of your local testing to make suggestions based on the “averages” of other customers that may be similar to you. The more accurate and detailed the information you provide them the better you will help them to help you make the best possible choices out of the options they have available.
mdgail1 recommended a good solution with a side-by-side split option to mitigate the differences in sleeping positions between you and your wife. This will also give you several layer arrangement possibilities to experiment with and fine-tune in-home the mattress support/comfort.
If you sleep prone, as you may be aware, this is the worst posture for your lumbar region, regardless of core strength. Everyone needs good deep support to assist with alignment. Your muscles relax a bit when sleeping at night, so maintenance of alignment falls mostly to the mattress itself. You may wish to review the guidelines in this Sleep Positions Article so that you avoid hyperextension in a swayback position that can cause back issues. Stomach sleeping is a common source of back issues as stomach sleepers tend to sleep in a “swayback” position, especially if their comfort layer is too thick and/or their support layer is too soft.
Generally, I’d recommend you see the mattress shopping guidelines … make sure to avoid major brands or any mattress that don’t disclose the quality of the materials inside them because there is no way to identify any weak links in a mattress or make meaningful comparisons with other mattresses. (In most cases, the major brands use some low-quality materials in the upper layers of their mattresses that make them a risky choice in terms of durability and the useful life of the mattress). Saatva, on the other hand, provides all the information you need to make an informed choice in terms of the quality/durability of their materials.
I look forward to hearing what your finalist(s) are … hoping you don’t face the same issues with posting this time around!
BTW … I remember in the past another subscriber trying tp post and having the same issue. We narrowed it down to an emoji being pasted and the system would give an error. As we recently changed the forum template there may be a similar issue. If the issue occurs with your next post.I’d be very grateful if you could report an issue here for our Dev Team to have a look at.
Thanks for the advice. The site has been a very helpful resource.
We decided to go with the SleepEz Hybrid Select. SleepEZ was quick to ship on their end. It arrived yesterday, slightly delayed by two days due to FedEx.
It arrived in a poor non-branded looking box. Pretty beat up, but the mattress didn’t suffer any damage. It required two people to move it to our bedroom. It’s only a queen, but it’s a heavy box.
First impressions. The firm side was pretty firm and not very luxurious feeling and we opted for the medium side. The coils are a lot more bouncy than our previous Beautyrest Dalton mattress. Also edge support is not as firm when you sit to get up (not that it’s a problem, just a difference.) Overall, the coil structure is more noticeable than on our previous mattress. The mattress has an interesting smell (I believe the natural wool) that I actually find nice. Some may disagree with that statement though. It’s an unusual smell. I’ll report back in a week.
So we’ve been sleeping on the SleepEZ Hybrid mattress for a week and here’s an update. The wool smell I mentioned previously dissipated completely within 2 days. We are still sleeping on the medium plush side. I’m the one with lower back pain and haven’t experienced any pain since we started sleeping on the mattress. I typically sleep on my stomach, but have also been sleeping on my side and back and no pain! I am sleeping for longer uninterrupted stretches every night. The lower back pain would typically wake me up every couple of hours before. So this is quite an improvement. Actually dreaming more too, which probably confirms the longer stretches of sleep I’m getting.
The only negative is still the feel of the mattress, which is comfortable, but not as luxurious feeling as our previous pillow-top mattress if you know what I mean. But the fact remains, we sleep much better on this mattress and ultimately that’s what matters most. It’s also a more natural mattress than our previous mattress and that’s important to us. This mattress was probably $400-$500 cheaper than our previous Beautyrest too … so there is that!
So sorry. I meant to say 3 inch topper. This may give you a more plush feeling. They have a natural latex topper and a wool/latex topper. Perhaps the additon may give you the plushness you are hopin to find? I know when I got my mattress, which is a ROMA, I flipped it three or four times until I realized that the medium/plush side is what I wanted all along. But, after I had slept on it for a few months I was considering adding a topper for the same reason as you. Just a bit more plushness.
I thought about it, but frankly seeing how well I am sleeping on this base mattress, I don’t feel like spending more and potentially messing with my sleep comfort. Ultimately, what matters most to me is the sleep comfort. The mattress feel when I enter the bed is really secondary and it’s not like it’s uncomfortable to start with.
