My new mattress arrived on Friday. The box was in very bad shape. The mattress itself was ok. It was rolled in a heavy, clear plastic and also encased in plastic. As I unrolled it from the plastic wrap. It began to expand after about half way. After the first layer was removed, I carefully cut the encasing plastic and removed that. It was fully expanded within a half hour. I put on the mattress cover and made the bed. The bed seemed very soft. I slept in it that night. My sleep seemed about the same as my other bed. I was able to sleep on my side better than the other bed. I generally wake up a couple of times in the night, darned insomnia (thanks, Mom) The mattress did get firmer by the next night.
It is feeling much more plush than my inner spring with pillow top. No pain. And sleeping on my side isn’t making my arm fall asleep like on the other mattress.
My one thought is it too soft? I know it will soften up of the next crew weeks. I’m hoping the base will maintain the support needed.
Hi Chirurgeon,
Thanks for the report and your feedback

That’s good news that your arm isn’t falling asleep which usually indicates the need for a thicker/softer and more conforming comfort layer (which you now have).
All mattresses will go through an initial break in period where the foams will soften somewhat and the cover will stretch but the firmness of the polyfoam in the base layer which is where your primary support comes from (that is the layer that “stops” the heavier pelvis from sinking down too far) won’t be affected much by this because it is deeper in the mattress. Most of the initial softening is in the comfort layers of a mattress.
The key to a successful mattress (no matter how soft or firm it may be on top or how deeply you sink into it) is that it keeps your spine in neutral alignment by controlling how “evenly” you sink into it and how much each part of the body sinks in relative to the others.
