My search for innerspring in MN

Hello,

I thought I’d share my experience searching for innerspring mattress in MN. I’ve never really had a good feel with memory foam or latex.

I initially tried the major brands at Macy’s and Mattress Firm and really liked the Simmons Beautyrest series. It felt very comfortable at a sale price of 1800 or so. I almost got taken by this “amazing” sale but wanted to look online for reviews. I discovered a lot of complaints about poor durability and eventually discovered this site.

I did a lot of checking at the stores you recommended for MN, and settled on three stores I wanted to try: Original Mattress Factory, Restwell Mattress, and Northstar Mattress. In the first go-round I checked for comfort and also asked about quality. Here is what I personally liked:

Original Mattress: I liked the Orthopedic Pillow Top and Premier Super PT. The Eurotop was also quite nice but a little too plush for me. They said they use 1.5-2.0 density foam on top in their mattresses.
Restwell: I liked the Eloquence mattress they offer. Density on that is 2.0 polyfoam. I also liked the Emerald mattress, but not quite enough foam.
Northstar: I liked the Equinox (both tight top and pillowtop). The person there didn’t know the foam density. These were good but not as good as the other two places in my opinion. Since the prices were comparable I eliminated these.

So, after bringing the fiancee to test those ones I ended up with the OMF Orthopedic Premier Super PT and the Restwell Eloquence as the two to choose from. With delivery the Eloquence was about $50 cheaper, but basically comparable (both arond 1000). She slightly prefered the Eloquence, and I liked their warranty better. Plus I think the quality is a little better as well. So, Eloquence is the choice for us!

I haven’t purchased it yet so if there is anything else I should check please let me know.

Thanks for maintaining such a great site. I learned a lot from the articles and forums here. And I believe I’ll get a better mattress for half the price… win win!

Hi Red_Ice,

What you would need to know is the thickness of every layer and the density of each layer so you can make sure that you don’t have too much lower density polyfoam in the upper layers of the mattress where durability is most important.

It is very unusual that a mattress only uses a single density foam and I would suspect with the Restwell that you have been given the density of the support layer not the comfort layers which may be lower.

I would make sure that you have this information … layer by layer … before you buy. The information you have received is too general to use to assess the quality or value of the mattress.
