My Take on the BalooLiving Weighted Throw Blanket

I have to say, the moment I got the Baloo Living Weighted Throw Blanket, I was pretty impressed. The packaging was very well thought out. The cardboard shipping box was perfectly sized for the throw inside, so nothing shifted during transit and it arrived in excellent condition. Inside, the throw came in a sturdy, almost designer-like canvas shopping bag. It reminded me of the kind of presentation I’ve seen with some of my Brooks Brothers pillows and duvet inserts. That little detail gave the whole experience a more premium, luxury, polished feel.

The throw itself is incredibly soft. The cotton cover feels silky smooth, almost like high-end silk rather than standard cotton. It felt luxurious from the very first touch.

The throw weighs 12 pounds, which is the only weight it comes in. Since this is a throw blanket and not a full-size bed blanket, the weight is not selected based on body weight or mattress size like you might select for a larger bed sized weighted blanket. The 12-pound weight felt comfortable enough for relaxing on the couch or layering over yourself in bed. When I first picked up the shipping box, I was surprised by how heavy it was, but once I opened it and felt the throw, I remembered the weight made perfect sense. It was evenly distributed, and the overall construction looked excellent. The baffling squares and other stitched quilted design were uniform and well filled, and the stitching was clean and precise. I did not notice any loose threads or signs of poor craftsmanship.

One thing I noticed while handling the throw was the presence of loops not only on all four corners, but also halfway along each of the four sides. That clearly shows it is meant to be used with a matching cover. After checking, I found out the cover is sold separately. While it would have been a nice gesture for the price, or even if they charged a bit more, packaging the cover with the throw would have made for a super premium combination. I did see that they do offer a bundle package, which is a good option, but including the cover as standard would have added extra value and convenience. It would be so much easier to clean the cover than throw this 12lb washable blanket in the washer and dryer.

Using the throw thus far, only a few nights in, has been a great experience. I don’t tend to sleep warm, but even so, the cotton cover did not add any extra heat. The glass bead filling was completely silent and stayed evenly in place. The weight gave me a calm, grounded feeling, and I could actually feel that I slept more deeply and woke up feeling more rested. I think for those who tend to move frequently during sleep, this throw may help reduce nighttime movement and minimize tossing and turning, leading to a more restful night.

It is also easy to manage. I had no trouble folding it or moving it around when needed. I have not had to clean it yet, but the fabric feels durable and well-made, and I expect it will hold up well over time.

One thing to note is that the throw is made in China. I know some people might be cautious about that, but in this case, it really doesn’t feel like a stereotypical mass-market China-made product, although it would be great if it were made here in the USA. The quality, attention to detail, and presentation are all excellent.

Compared to cheaper weighted blankets I have tried before, this throw stands out in every way. It does cost more, but the comfort, materials, and overall experience are on a completely different level. If I had to choose again, I would still go with the Baloo. It feels and performs like a premium product and certainly is worth more than what I call those “Amazon Specials.” I have no doubt that their mattress-sized weighted blankets are equally as impressive.

If you are looking for a weighted throw blanket that looks great, feels amazing, and actually helps you relax and sleep better, this one is a solid choice. Just keep in mind the cover is sold separately, which is the only thing I would change, and perhaps being made here in the USA.

Update*** I had the opportunity to order the cotton throw duvet cover. It took a minute to figure out how to put it on the throw and easily make it look even and nice. This throw is worth every penny. I suggest doing it as a bundle as it barely adds to the cost, rather than ordering them separately, as the cover does not come with the weighted blanket.

Having said all that, the cover is exquisite. Not sure how they do it, but the cotton cover feels like silk. Cool and crisp. I happened to get the blue, but it is just awesome. Finally, it’s great when a product actually performs as advertised. Kudos @BalooLiving, your product really does match the promise it is advertised to be.

I’m thrilled to see @BalooLiving joining The Mattress Underground Community! In my opinion, it was long overdue for quality bedding, pillows, and sleep accessories brands to make their presence known here.

I’m really intrigued by @BalooLiving’s products and the consistent positive feedback about how soothing, comforting, and high-quality they are. I have a few questions I’d love to learn more about.

While I understand that weighted blankets are known for promoting deeper, more restful sleep and helping to reduce stress and anxiety, I’m curious to dive deeper into the science behind this. What is it about the weight and pressure that triggers these beneficial human reactions?

Also, when it comes to quality, could you share a bit about the fabric specifications you use for your products? I’m especially interested in why linen is such a great material for bedding and sheets. Additionally, I’d love to hear more about your stonewashed sheets and the benefits of this unique fabric treatment.

Hi Sunnylynn,

I look forward to @BalooLiving ‘s introducing their complete product line and their philosophy behind their selection choices of materials, fabrics and treatments. I was so impressed with their weighted blanket, I just ordered some of their linen products to try. I have no doubt they will be as beautiful and comfortable as the blanket. I will share my experience after I have had the chance to use them.

In the meantime, hopefully, @BalooLiving can offer a bit of insight to your questions.

Maverick, in your first post you mentioned:

“Not sure how they do it, but the cotton cover feels like silk.”

That really caught my attention! I wonder if what you mean includes that smooth, almost “slippery” convenience that real silk provides, the kind that makes it easier to turn left or right in bed without friction. That’s something I definitely look forward to finding in quality bedding.

And by the way, Linen is made from the flax plant, one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world.

I guess the best comparison I can make is, we have some silk pillowcases in the house. Normally, I would not use silk bedding, but my wife needed them to sleep on, it is a hair thing, which I have no idea how to elaborate on that, but I suppose most women know what that is about, particularly those with curly hair.

Anyway, the cotton cover of the weighted blanket, and the duvet cover, felt and had the appearance of the silk pillowcases. Clearly, the Baloo covers were made with cotton, but somehow they are processed to feel silky soft, with that silky sheen, and slippery feel, just like silk.

So yes, this material will make it easier for you to move around if these were conventional sheets made with the same material.

I am looking forward to getting the Linen Pillowcases I ordered to see how they work and feel.

Hi @Sunnylynn thank you so much for your questions! And thank you @Maverick for the thorough review and warm welcome to The Mattress Underground! We’re so happy to be here.

Weighted blankets can weigh anywhere from nine to thirty pounds, depending on the size and density of concentration of the weight a person is looking for. They work to improve sleep and reduce stress through the mechanism of deep pressure touch, (also called deep pressure stimulation) which has a range of benefits and have been well studied! It is interesting that there are also some benefits to sleep through the relief of some types of pain, such as anxiety-linked pain (e.g. fibromyalgia or tension headaches), and physical pain (e.g. join or muscle pain). Here’s more about how deep pressure touch works for both:

Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System: Deep, even pressure on the body—like from a weighted blanket, massage, or firm hug—stimulates pressure receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the skin and muscles. These signals tell the brain to slow down the “fight or flight” response and shift into “rest and digest” mode. This reduces stress hormones like cortisol and helps the body relax, and can also lower pain sensitivity.

Reduces Muscle Tension and Inflammation: When the body feels safe and calm, muscles naturally release tension. Chronic pain often involves tight muscles or protective guarding; deep pressure helps override this reflex. Improved circulation also delivers more oxygen to tissues, which can ease inflammation and promote healing.

Triggers the Release of “Feel-Good” Neurochemicals: Deep touch stimulates the release of:

  • Serotonin – stabilizes mood and modulates pain.

  • Dopamine – enhances motivation and reward.

  • Oxytocin – known as the “cuddle hormone,” it increases trust and reduces anxiety.
Together, these chemicals dampen pain perception and increase overall wellbeing.

Improves Sleep and Recovery: Deep pressure can improve sleep quality by increasing melatonin production. Better sleep supports the body’s natural pain regulation systems and reduces fatigue-related pain sensitivity.

We use natural materials in all our bedding products, because natural fibers breathe more easily, and regulating temperature without overheating is very important for quality sleep.

As you mentioned, flax is an heirloom fiber, and our linen is sourced from certified European flax and is certified to meet the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard, meaning free and clear of more than 300 chemicals and compounds commonly found in the treatment and processing of textiles. Flax has a thicker weave and therefore breathes, it is also moisture absorbing, further leading to its natural thermoregulating qualities. Linen Sheets are naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. They can lead to better sleep quality, reduce skin irritation for those with sensitive skin, and maintain a hygienic and fresh sleeping environment. Finding a linen that is durable yet soft is the challenge, and we think we have found the perfect balance of softness, breathability and durability with our linens.

Our cotton weighted blankets and covers are made with the same clean and cool cotton, which has a sateen finish. The sateen weave is what lends the smooth and almost glossy look. This is different from a percale, which has a slightly different weave and a rougher texture. One is not better than the other, it is a matter of preference. Our cotton also meets the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard and furthermore we replaced the standard polyester batting interior fill with a clean cotton batting. This sets us apart from other “cotton” weighted blankets on the market, and helps keep us cool while sleeping.

Since this post serves as our introduction, I’ll also add that we offer a Lifetime Quality Guarantee on all products, and giving back to the Earth is part of our DNA. We offset our carbon footprint and then double the offset to pay it forward through our partnership with SeaTrees, an innovative nonprofit; we use plastic-free packaging, recycle and donate returned items so nearly nothing is left to waste, and we upcycle returned linens with a workshop in Houston, Texas to transform them by hand into the beautiful Paloma linen robe, which is for sale on our website. We’re dedicated to serving and being a positive force in the world. Anyone who joins our email list will hear of our upcoming virtual event coming up on 11/5/25 to experience Holy Fire Reiki, a distance energy work session and healing circle being led by a beloved guest facilitator. I think that is it for now, but we’re so happy to be here and welcome any and all questions, ideas, and comments!

Hi @BalooLiving , and thank you so much for your thoughtful, educational and more clinical response! I really appreciated learning more about the science behind the benefits of weighted blankets. I can honestly say, based on my experience, that the effects are very real. Oddly enough, I’m usually the one digging deep behind the scenes on a product, but your response was incredibly informative and offered a much more in-depth look than I expected.

When I first experienced the Baloo Weighted Throw Blanket, I wasn’t just impressed, I was surprised. The level of care in the packaging and presentation instantly set it apart. It felt like I was opening something special and intentional, not just another product off an assembly line. The canvas bag, the perfect boxing, the premium feel of the cotton, it all gave off a quiet message: “This is made for you.”

But the magic came when I actually used it.

The first night I tried it, I felt an immediate sense of grounding. It was like my nervous system took a deep breath and said, thank you. I hadn’t expected to feel such a noticeable difference, especially after only one night. But I slept more deeply. I tossed and turned less. And the next morning, I woke up feeling… still. That’s the only way I can describe it. Still, and rested.

There’s something about the weight that feels just right. Not too heavy, not too light. It’s like a gentle hug holding you in place. Safe, secure, and soothed. And the texture of the fabric? Somehow both cool and cozy. I’m not sure what kind of magic you’ve woven into this blanket, but it is certainly impressive. I’ve tried other weighted blankets in the past, but nothing has felt quite like this. Baloo hits the balance right, not just in physical design, but in how it makes you feel.

Adding the cotton duvet cover took it to the next level. It took a little finesse to get it on just right, but once I did, it felt like a true luxury experience. I chose the blue, and it’s stunning. Cool to the touch, crisp, and smooth, better than a true high-end hotel bedding. The kind of bedding you look forward to snuggling into.

Even the brand’s values should be commended. Natural materials, plastic-free packaging, a lifetime guarantee, and even upcycling returned products into something new. That kind of integrity shows up in the product itself. As I recognized when I first tried it, you can feel the care that went into making it.

So while @BalooLiving shared the science (which I love!), I just wanted to chime in again with the human side (partly because I overlooked the science side  ) This blanket will help folks slow down in a fast-moving world. It’s a quiet luxury that reminds those who use it to take care of themself, physically and emotionally. And that’s something I think a lot of us could use more of.

Thank you, Baloo, for creating something that really lives up to its promise.

I found this thread and actually signed up to comment. I purchased the throw, a linen cover, and a Full/Queen blanket with a linen cover during the pandemic.

I am very petite (about 112 pounds) and suffer from chronic pain syndrome due to joint hyper mobility. I am frequently injured because of joint instability and going to bed at night is something I dread because my muscles tense up and go rigid in an automatic protective response because my joint instability led to a pinched nerve in my neck a partially paralyzed left arm that took two years of excruciating physical therapy to recover from.

Having said all that, I have never been able to use the throw. It is way too heavy for me and hurts me. I’m not even capable of pushing it off my upper body because it’s too heavy. Still, I saw the quality and decided to try the blanket hoping the weight distribution would be more manageable for me, using reviews mentioning children using it as a guide.

The blanket has been in storage for three years and I can’t live without my down comforter in the PNW in winter. However, I pulled it out of storage, got the cover on and slept with it last night for the first time in several years. I fell asleep much faster than normal, did not toss and turn, and only woke up once for a bathroom break. When I woke up my physical body felt a sense of relaxation I haven’t experienced in years and I have been pain-free all day today. Honestly, I was shocked. When I had used it previously I did not notice such a remarkable shift in the quality of my sleep or pain level the next day, but wow. I can count on one hand the number of days I am pain-free per year. This was one of those days.

I am intrigued by the lifetime guarantee as I have never been able to use the throw blanket as it really hurts me and is impossibly heavy. I wonder if I could exchange or return it? It’s like brand new.

I hope this helps someone. My physical therapist who is well-versed in chronic pain, informed me that when the body experiences a trauma like my arm being paralyzed (I have full range of motion now.) that it goes into a protective mode. That, combined with joint instability and frequent injuries, often in my own home just doing normal stuff, has resulted in “going to bed” being a nightly trial of extreme discomfort, anxiety about the pending discomfort, and an inability to physically relax. Last night, I experienced none of that and woke up feeling rested and pain free.
