Hi @Sunnylynn thank you so much for your questions! And thank you @Maverick for the thorough review and warm welcome to The Mattress Underground! We’re so happy to be here.
Weighted blankets can weigh anywhere from nine to thirty pounds, depending on the size and density of concentration of the weight a person is looking for. They work to improve sleep and reduce stress through the mechanism of deep pressure touch, (also called deep pressure stimulation) which has a range of benefits and have been well studied! It is interesting that there are also some benefits to sleep through the relief of some types of pain, such as anxiety-linked pain (e.g. fibromyalgia or tension headaches), and physical pain (e.g. join or muscle pain). Here’s more about how deep pressure touch works for both:
Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System: Deep, even pressure on the body—like from a weighted blanket, massage, or firm hug—stimulates pressure receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the skin and muscles. These signals tell the brain to slow down the “fight or flight” response and shift into “rest and digest” mode. This reduces stress hormones like cortisol and helps the body relax, and can also lower pain sensitivity.
Reduces Muscle Tension and Inflammation: When the body feels safe and calm, muscles naturally release tension. Chronic pain often involves tight muscles or protective guarding; deep pressure helps override this reflex. Improved circulation also delivers more oxygen to tissues, which can ease inflammation and promote healing.
Triggers the Release of “Feel-Good” Neurochemicals: Deep touch stimulates the release of:
-
Serotonin – stabilizes mood and modulates pain.
-
Dopamine – enhances motivation and reward.
-
Oxytocin – known as the “cuddle hormone,” it increases trust and reduces anxiety.
Together, these chemicals dampen pain perception and increase overall wellbeing.
Improves Sleep and Recovery: Deep pressure can improve sleep quality by increasing melatonin production. Better sleep supports the body’s natural pain regulation systems and reduces fatigue-related pain sensitivity.
We use natural materials in all our bedding products, because natural fibers breathe more easily, and regulating temperature without overheating is very important for quality sleep.
As you mentioned, flax is an heirloom fiber, and our linen is sourced from certified European flax and is certified to meet the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard, meaning free and clear of more than 300 chemicals and compounds commonly found in the treatment and processing of textiles. Flax has a thicker weave and therefore breathes, it is also moisture absorbing, further leading to its natural thermoregulating qualities. Linen Sheets are naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. They can lead to better sleep quality, reduce skin irritation for those with sensitive skin, and maintain a hygienic and fresh sleeping environment. Finding a linen that is durable yet soft is the challenge, and we think we have found the perfect balance of softness, breathability and durability with our linens.
Our cotton weighted blankets and covers are made with the same clean and cool cotton, which has a sateen finish. The sateen weave is what lends the smooth and almost glossy look. This is different from a percale, which has a slightly different weave and a rougher texture. One is not better than the other, it is a matter of preference. Our cotton also meets the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard and furthermore we replaced the standard polyester batting interior fill with a clean cotton batting. This sets us apart from other “cotton” weighted blankets on the market, and helps keep us cool while sleeping.
Since this post serves as our introduction, I’ll also add that we offer a Lifetime Quality Guarantee on all products, and giving back to the Earth is part of our DNA. We offset our carbon footprint and then double the offset to pay it forward through our partnership with SeaTrees, an innovative nonprofit; we use plastic-free packaging, recycle and donate returned items so nearly nothing is left to waste, and we upcycle returned linens with a workshop in Houston, Texas to transform them by hand into the beautiful Paloma linen robe, which is for sale on our website. We’re dedicated to serving and being a positive force in the world. Anyone who joins our email list will hear of our upcoming virtual event coming up on 11/5/25 to experience Holy Fire Reiki, a distance energy work session and healing circle being led by a beloved guest facilitator. I think that is it for now, but we’re so happy to be here and welcome any and all questions, ideas, and comments!
