I’m considering purchasing a coconut coir mattress (https://www.thefutonshop.com/cocobase-coconut-coir-mattress-base) from Natural Home by The Futon Shop. They’re based in San Francisco but can ship nationwide. Not sure about people’s experiences with them and wondering if folks here have any experience with their bedding?
P.S.: I’m aware that the listing is for a mattress -base- but I intend to use it as a mattress because I need ultra firm. Might put a topper if necessary. Just want to learn about what Mattress Underground has to say about Natural Home by The Futon Shop.
You can see all conversations including The Futon Shop here. I did a quick scan and found that the major complaint was they don’t have an awesome return policy.
We personally don’t have anything against them and find they offer a wide selection of high quality products.
I was checking out the base you’re looking to use as a mattress. Wow! Coconut coir. That’s pretty firm! What kind of bed do you sleep on now?
Hi Nikki – Thank you so much for that information. Yes I was concerned about the return policy as well since they don’t seem to offer refunds, only exchanges. Otherwise, it’s assuring to know that they aren’t major complaints about them here.
Before my current mattress, I was using a Seahorse diamond mattress for 2 decades (in SE Asia) and hoped to get one in the US. They are very firm. I’ve never been able to find any equally firm mattress in the US. When I contacted Seahorse at their Canadian branches, they said that they do not ship to US. While I would be happy to make the drive to Canada just for their mattress because I know I will absolutely be happy with it and use it for a long time, I was hesitant about how to make a full size mattress fit into an SUV + going across customs.
So I bought the firmest foam mattress I could find from a Chinese furniture store in Flushing NYC about a year ago. The salesperson told me that was the firmest, the next step up would be coconut coir. Of course, the specifications of the mattress foam and layering are unknown. The salesperson also assured me that the foam would hold up for at least 3-5 years. I was happy with the firmness at that time. However, it has started to have an indent in the middle (hip & butt area) recently - only been a year. I believe that the support core is holding up but the top comfort layer is the one that’s indented.
I’ve found a temporary fix and it has worked so far but I don’t know how long it will last so I’ve started my search for a replacement just in case.
To prevent such a problem with the future mattress - and because I prefer ultra firm bedding, I thought the best way would be to get the coconut coir mattress foundation base and use it as a mattress. It will most likely not indent / sag with time and will last. And if it proves to be too hard, I can always place a topper or futon to soften it a little.
Never knew about them but I just looked at their website. The airweave futon looks exactly like what I’m looking for! Combined with a tatami mat on the base of the steel foundation, I imagine this is the perfect and most feasible option. Thank you so much BillyIdol!
