Natural ticking cover advice for coil base

Hello,

I finally bit the bullet and purchased my Quad pocket coils and QuadMini coils from the helpful Matan at PCS. For my DIY king mattress, I went with two twin XL units (15.5 and 14.75 gauge) with one firm side on each.

Here’s my plan so far:

  1. Wood slat bed frame (2" gaps)

  2. A layer of firm wool felt under the main coils

  3. 8" pocket coils

  4. 3" Mini coils

  5. Encase these bottom layers together

  6. Use a pre-made wool topper for the comfort layer

Since I’ve never done this before, I figured I’d start simple and adjust from there. Maybe I’m jumping the gun worrying about a case before I lay on it and figure out what comfort layers I need, but from what I understand, you don’t want too much between you and the Mini coils.

I really liked the look of PCS’s premium case, which has structured sides and bottom with a stretchier top. However, I’m trying to stay with natural, non-toxic materials, so I hesitated because of the polyester. I’m leaning toward wool and cotton instead.

I’ve seen so many options out there, but I’m not sure which way to go—quilted or heavier knit. I feel like a quilted cover might give the coil’s sides more structure, but it could also take away from the responsiveness of the Mini coils and make it feel too firm on top. A slightly stretchy one would preserve the feel but might not offer much side support.

Is there a “perfect” balance out there? Or should I be contacting places like DIY Natural Home to see if they’d make a sort of Frankenstein cover for me—quilted sides and bottom with a knit top? I might have found a place in Toronto that may be able to work with me (Fine Cotton Factory), but I’m still in talks.

Bonus points if you know of a source in Canada!

You’d be shocked (or maybe not haha) at how many people spend about as much time shopping for an encasement as they do for the rest of the components.

It can make a massive difference, especially to “princess and the pea” sleepers.

You may want to look at the two options from Memory Foam Comfort (@MFC) - they’re in Canada!

Both the Bamboo and Wool options look to have a little bit more structure around the sides. The Wool one is quilted, but not extensively so.

Thank you so much! The fine cotton factory got back to me and will make one to spec for $500-600ish, so I could potentially get a quilted bottom and sides for structure with a stretchier cotton top. Or do you feel I’m overthinking how much structure the sides need to have and one of the ones at MFC will work just fine?
