I’ve been looking for a new mattress for years, reading tons of reviews and then getting confused and discouraged and giving up for a few months only to start in again.
At the end of the day, being a two-time cancer survivor, I decided I wanted an organic mattress so dug into those reviews.
I’m a small female - 5’3" and 115lbs and have a lot of spine issues - osteoarthrities, bulging disks, bone spurs, scoliosis, cervical stenosis, and piriformis syndrome which affects the sciatic nerve so I need a lot of pressure relief, but due to my back issues I need a mattress with good support, and don’t like mattresses that feel “dead” so knew I wanted a hybrid.
I had an older Serta pillowtop that was a medium-firm but always was too firm so I got a Sleep on Latex Dunlop topper which helped, but I got sick of it sliding around all the time even when it was under the sheet and still didn’t provide the comfort I wanted.
Because the Dunlop topper was not as “cushy” as I wanted, I stayed away from latex beds and latex hybrids but had concerns about memory foam durability and off-gassing.
While buying new sofa cushions one day we checked out the beds and really like a hybrid memory foam Kingsdown bed that felt super comfy, but the store alllowed no returns/exchanges, and the Kingsdown online had completely different beds. I also read quite a few reviews that said Kingsdown beds weren’t durable and customer service wasn’t great. I sent an email to Kingsdown to ask them a few questions and did not find them helpful, so gave up on that - plus they weren’t organic.
After some research, I decided to check out Naturepedic beds. I know people love the EOS but it was too pricey so was looking at the Serenade or Concerto. I love that they have stores you can try the beds but the nearest to us was 4 hours away and just not doable. So I called Naturepedic and got their Boston store, which was ironic, as we used to live in a Boston burb before we moved to SC.
The woman was so helpful and answered all my questions. I really wanted to try the cheaper Serenade but my husband wanted to try the Concerto so that’s what we got. They offer a 100 night trial.
Because our old mattress was on just a metal frame and the mattress has to be on a platform with slats less than 3" apart, I searched for a new frame and found a great company that makes handmade unfinished bed frames in North Carolina that are extremely reasonable. It’s called Carolina Leg Company if anyone is interested. We got just the platform and my husband made a headboard and I think it was $390 for a Queen. If you want the headboard it’s a little more, I think $435. They also have another version, more expensive. My husband painted it but you could just put poly on it. It’s incredibly well made and sturdy. Even with the old mattress on it, I noticed a difference.
The bed arrived quicker than expected and it is heavy. My husband, who is 5’'11" and 165lbs had to get a friend to help him lift it on the bed. It unfurled fairly quickly, and had absolute no off-gassing or any kind of smell, and I am very smell-sensitive. Major points for that. We were tight on time - you’re supposed to let it unfurl for a full day or even overnight but due to our neighbor’s schedule we only had about 4 hours to let it unfurl. And it was find.
The bed is incredibly comfortable. I would say it’s the perfect blend of softness and support. The Concerto has regular coils, but also has a layer of micro coils. It is responsive but there is very little motion transfer.
Before we got the bed I had bought a topper from Coop - a combo of Certipur-US certified memory foam and polyfill. It’s also Greenguard Certified. Unlike other memory foam or polyfill mattress toppers I’ve tried, this is fully baffled so the fill doesn’t move, and is 5" thick. It also has 2" wide straps to secure the topper so it doesn’t move. I think we paid $299 for it. It’s the best topper I’ve ever slept on and gives me that “cloud feel” I love.
The Concerto bed was actually fine on its own - very comfy. But the only thing I don’t like about the bed is the tufted buttons, Even with a thinnish mattress pad, I could still feel them. My husband doesn’t notice them at all. So I decided to put the topper on the mattress. It is SO comfy. I was waking up with low back pain every morning with my old mattress and I don’t with the Concerto, even with the topper on it. So I know it’s providing good support.
I have no idea how the Serenade would have compared. It lacks that second row of micro coils, and although it used to just have a firm and extra firm option, they have now added a plush version. It’s cheaper than the Concerto.
One thing I just noticed this AM is that Naturepedic mattresses are the first mattresses that have recently been certified (April 1, 2025) by the Environmental Working Group. So that makes me feel extra-safe about the purity and materials they use. They are also made in the US which is important to me and customer service is outstanding.
So for anyone who is like me who is small, wants and organic bed, and likes a soft feel, I think Naturepedic is worth checking out. They are having a 20% off Memorial Day sale and as I said have a 100 day trial.
Hope this helps.
