Navigating the Mattress Maze

So it has been around 10 yrs since I bought my last mattress Cool Lux from Brooklyn Bedding. It is all foam. So now it feels like it needs to be replaced. I’m a side sleeper and wake up numerous times throughout the night with pain numbness on my hip lower back area. Now there are so many mattress companies it is overwhelming.

Finding the right mattress is a nightmare especially now since there are so many mattress companies now with so many configurations online. Also I cannot tell which review websites a non biased and which ones are just getting kickbacks from the mattress companies. Anyone know which ones are legit. As an example is Naplab unbiased? Also the Sleep Like the Dead reviews?

when I bought my last mattress everything seemed to be about foam. Now I am seeing a lot of the coil systems again. Is everyone going to the coil foam hybrids? When they get old do you start feeling the coils? Anyone here liking the coil better than the foam?

So mattress recommendations would really help from people who have used specific mattresses.
I’m 6ft 240lbs 67yrs
Side sleeper
I have hip lower back pain while sleeping so have to turn often during the night.

Every time I go on a review site and put in my information for side sleeper they all recommend different mattresses.
I am interested in Saatva/Loom & Leaf/Zenhaven all the same company. They seem to have good reviews and very good return policy. I figure if you can do returns you will
eventually find the right mattress. Anyone have any experience with them?

I plan on buying online. I have learned that going to bed stores doesn’t work. They may feel comfortable on the showroom floor but all that changes after you get them home
and sleep on them for awhile. From past experience I have found that these bed stores take returns but they make it very difficult.

Any help recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi jet757f.

It is so hard to know which of the review sites are non-biased and really, most of them are receiving kickbacks of some kind and it doesn’t behoove them to give a terrible review when they’ve got affiliate partnerships or the potential for a commission from a sale based on a review on the site. I’d be interested to know how many truly bad reviews these kinds of sites have on them.

Either way, while reviews can be useful for some information, it’s really not going to tell you anything truly meaningful with regards to your specific needs, how the mattress sleeps 90+ nights in, etc.

Hybrids are definitely the popular option right now, but some people want all-foam or traditional innersprings or flippables and those are still out there!

If the comfort layer isn’t durable, it’s going to break down prematurely and while you may not feel the coils, you might just bottom out through the foam. Latex hybrids and latex all-foam configurations tend to fare the best under heavier sleeping profiles.

While I can’t offer a specific winning mattress for you, I’d be happy to try and list some options! Are you wanting plusher/medium/firm? Do you prefer a certain feel like memory foam (or not memory foam)? Do you tend to sleep hot?

Thanks for the reply.

The Brooklyn Bedding mattress (Cool Lux) that we have right now is all foam. It was never perfect and I thought about returning it but got tired of the hassle.
I had bought a conventional mattress from Ortho before that and had to exchange that one. The the exchange did not work out very well either. I even tried Sleep EZ where they send the different layers of latex and that never worked. Had to send them back. It is very difficult exchanging or returning a mattress when it is a king size bed. The other problem is that most places only allow one exchange so you can get stuck with a mattress that you don’t like.

I am confused whether I need plush/medium or firm. I just want to get the right mattress that lets me sleep so I don’t wake up every hour with my side number or hurting. I have to get up for work early. It seems like from what I have read that I need medium firm along those lines. I am leaning towards the latex hybrid or all latex, As far as the hybrid I would like to find a mattress with a lot of latex above the coils like the Avocado bed. Zenhaven seems to have a good latex bed with a different feel on each side. I like them too because they will deliver and setup and also pickup if you need to return. This is important with a bed like a king. These beds are very heavy.

Hello jet757f.

Sorry to hear you’ve had such rotten luck with your previous 3 mattress attempts! What was it about these mattresses you felt were ultimately fails for you? Did you have pain points or something to that effect?

I agree with your assessment here; this is probably accurate or a good starting point to decipher whether medium (or even medium-firm) is the right fit for you. The Avocado Green has a total of 5" of latex in their pillow top model. Similar mattresses you may be interested in are Luma’s hybrid slumber system and Nest’s Natural Latex Hybrid.
