TLDR: I need a mattress which is firm, arrives quickly, and won’t have much off-gassing. Any suggestions?
I need a mattress quickly. My old mattress has lost all support and my back is killing me.
I have asthma and am very sensitive to anything off-gassing. Generally when I buy furniture I leave it in my spare bedroom for at least 3 months before I feel comfortable using it. Last time I bought a box spring from a mainstream retailer even that took a few months to off-gas. So I’m reluctant to go buy a standard spring mattress from a mainstream retailer as I feel like it will take months to off-gas.
I am a big guy (6’3", 300 pounds) and I like a firm mattress. I was sleeping on an Ikea Myrbacka Firm Memory Foam mattress. It was absolutely perfect, except the memory foam take months to off-gas.
I live in Orange County CA (South of Los Angeles). I have a decent budget.
Any suggestions? I was looking at the Spindle. I love the concept. An all natural foam mattress which I can disassemble and move around just sounds fun. And I figured that the all natural Latex would off-gas quickly, or in any event be non-toxic. But they are on the East Coast and it will take a few weeks to get here. And I’ve never slept on all Latex, I’m just assuming it might be similar to Memory Foam.
Appreciate any suggestions! I’m at wit’s end and I really need to get something going quickly. I prefer to shop independently and try before I order but at this point I’ll take anything! Thanks in advance.
You should check out the Plank mattress from Brooklyn Bedding. I have issues similar to yours, namely requiring a firm mattress and having allergies. I have found the Plank mattress to be very firm, and have had no issues with allergies. I note that I have had allergic reactions multiple times in the past, in some cases to off-gassing from PU foam mattresses, and at other times to old mattresses that likely had residue of cigarette smoke or other contaminants from prior users, but have had no such issues with the Plank product.
I have been sleeping on the Plank mattress for about 18 months and am very happy with it. The mattress is foam and is delivered in a compressed package, making it convenient for shipping. They have a 120 day return policy. They have sales from time to time, and appear to have one active now. One sales person there told me that the Plank mattress felt like one was sleeping on the floor. Having had to sleep on a floor a few times, I reject that. I have found it to be firm but have not had painful pressure points as I did when sleeping on the floor a few years ago.
Thanks for sharing what you’re experiencing. It looks like voyager39 has similar support needs and has had success with the Plank!
As for Spindle, yes, I think you’d appreciate the customization allowed by a foam configuration and the freedom afforded by the ability to swap out and exchange layers until you find the right feel/fit.
As for it being similar to memory foam…yes and no. It has comparable pressure relieving qualities to memory foam as well due to its ability to form itself to the exact shape of your body profile while you are sleeping, and to do this instantly as you change positions. Latex and memory foam share this ability to form a pressure relieving cradle more than other more commonly used materials.
Because even in the softer versions it has a higher resilience and is more “supportive” than other foams, it will also help support the more recessed areas of your body, such as the lumbar, that need “filling in” and are not in close contact with the firmer support layers underneath and because of its resilience it less motion restricting than memory foam and changing positions and other movement on the mattress easier.
