Need help - can't get the right solution

First the background: I’m 5’4", 190lbs. Stomach sleeper but also rests on my back sometimes. I’m also 55, and while I’ve slept hot all my life - currently it’s a live volcano situation, hahaha

Live full time in an RV. Last mattress was from MattressMakers - coronado medium plush latex mattress. Had to sell with old RV because it was custom made. This RV has storage under the bed, so it cannot support the weight of a full latex mattress (already checked to see if I could replace with the same one). I also live in my RV full time in Mexico, so anything I get has to be the “in the box” type of shipping, where it can fit in my tiny toyota when I cross the border to pick it up. Any returns are also problematic. Takes me 4 hours to cross the border to pickup / return.

Currently it has a Zinus 10 inch Green Tea firm foam mattress on there. I tried sleeping on it the first night, and thought I’d have to be put in traction at the hospital and like I had an 8 hour mammogram :frowning:

Then I tried a simple mattress cover from Walmart. Helped cushion the girls a little, still woke up very sore.

Then I added a 1 inch soft latex layer from Sleep on Latex. This helped quite a bit, but still sinking a little too much. I can sleep okay on my stomach for the most part, but can’t lay on my back and read before bed.

At this point - I’m thinking maybe one of these options

1.) Green Tea foam + 3" Sleep On Latex topper in medium + cover of some sort

2.) Green Tea foam + Birch Mattress Topper from Helix (says it’s a medium), which includes cotton and wool cover

Does anyone have experience with either of those toppers? Or a recommendation on a different one that still comes in a manageable size box for shipping?

Thanks!

Hi bghouse.

Good to hear from you again. I’m also in Mexico (but way far south) and I understand the struggle all too well when it comes to finding the right kind of mattress and topper combo. I’m currently sleeping on a memory foam topper that I hate, but that I’m also just not in a headspace to try to get rid of at the moment. I’m considering repurposing it into dog beds for my dogs and just finding myself a wool topper!

Anyway…that’s a side tangent you weren’t expecting.

I’m sorry you had to part ways with the mattress that was working for you! And even moreso that you’re sleeping on a mattress that batters you all night.

I pulled up the specs on the Coronado and they used:
6" Firm Dunlop
3" Soft Talalay

I tried to find the specifications for the Zinus, but I couldn’t find the densities for their layers.
Are the layers glued together, by chance? If not, I wonder what it would feel like to replace their 2.5" memory foam top/comfort layer with 2" - 3" of soft Talalay instead (since that is what the Coronado used).

Or is there a specific reason you’re feeling that medium might be the better option for you?

Hi NikkiTMU - thanks for your insights.

It sounds like the Zinus doesn’t allow for modification. So not really able to replace anything in there.

I guess I was thinking I should do medium because I put the 1 inch soft topper on and while it is pretty good when sleeping on my stomach, if I try to be on my back at all - even just a few minutes reading on my phone - I can feel my back hurting. And I thought firmer was better for back and stomach sleepers?

But maybe 1inch of the soft talalay topper wasn’t enough, and I should put 3" of soft?

Ugh, it is so difficult to know which way to go with these. :frowning:

Hi bghouse.

Shoot. It would be convenient if you could take apart the Zinus.

When it comes to back and stomach sleeping (or any position for that matter) firmness is more related to preference. If you feel, for example, that you are getting adequate support with a plush 1" that’s perfectly acceptable!

The general recommendation that we give for a back sleeper is 2" of softer material on top of your mattress and then increasing or decreasing from there depending on other factors like weight, preferences, or other sleeping positions.

I hope that helps in some way!

That does help, thank you. I’m going to take this 1" topper at a time and add until I find what works.
