Need help choosing a mattress for a heavier side sleeper with lower back pain

Hey all,

Wife and I are in the midst of searching for a new mattress. I am a 6’5", ~245lbs side sleeper, (more like fetal position), wife is 5’5", ~175lbs, side and stomach sleeper. We are both dealing with significant back pain from our current mattress. We are also upsizing from a Queen to a Cal-King so my feet stop hanging off the end. Budget is around $2500 or so.

We currently have a SleepEZ Hybrid 360 that is just worn out, with significant sunken spots where we sleep. (Probably at no fault to SleepEZ, used it too long on a bedframe that had inadequate support) My main pain point seems to be that my hips are sinking too far and causing issues.

Our main concerns are just having enough support for our lower back pain. We both prefer a firmer mattress, and to sleep “on” the bed instead of “in” it. Motion transfer is important, as our current frame/mattress combo is like a boat every time we move. Neither of us love the “memory” of memory foam, and like some bounce to the mattress.

In my research it seems like a hybrid would be best for us, and I “think” I’ve narrowed it down to four options, which I’d love to hear opinions on. (Or hear more options if you have them!)

In no particular order:

  • Brooklyn Bedding - Titan Plus Elite
This seems like a good option, built for heavier people, lots of features, but seems to have a lot going on that i don’t see other places, micro coils etc. Optional cooling cover is a nice addition.

  • Engineered Sleep - Duo Performance
I like the replaceable top section of this, seems like for a long-term option it could make it last much longer. Heard many good things about them, and being trusted on here is reassuring. (Not sure if I chose the correct model here, but according to their quiz this is what i need) Right at the top of our budget while on sale.

  • DLX - LatexLux Hybrid/ (Medium or Firm? not sure)
Seems like a great company, love that its family owned. Seems like a great, quality product that they stand behind, and read many reviews raving about their customer service. Really like the Comfort Assurance for life of the mattress. Not sure if Medium or Firm would be best.

  • Nolah Evolution Comfort +
Hadn’t heard of this brand before, but for the price it looks really good. Heavy gauge coils, and zoned support seem like they would be a huge benefit. Optional cooling cover is a nice bonus as well. I’ve read good reviews, but hard to tell when it seems like everything is a paid ad or a bot these days.

Any thoughts? I’m open to other suggestions, or anything to narrow it down any. Unfortunately nowhere near carries any of these beds, so getting to lay on them in person is out of the question. I would love to avoid making the delivery man hate me for delivering multiple beds and returns, so doing a half dozen tests isn’t ideal either.

Thanks!

The DLX latex uses a layer of soft foam in the cover on top of latex, with transition foam on top of coils. The thing about latex is that it is always trying to give you a more on the top feel in your bed, so even if you got medium in that model you would still get conformity for side sleeping while feeling on top of the bed. Of course you could try firm but thats if youre sure that is what you would like. You can kind of imagine how the bed would feel if you think about the construction of it. Im 6’0" and 220lbs and prefer medium as a sidesleeper.

The titan plus elite i am also a fan of the construction. The titan flex foam is a polyfoam made to have similar properties to latex, but with cooling gel integrated into the material. It’s energex with cooling gel. It is about 80% as responsive as latex. I do think that is a well built bed. It will feel soft on the top and supportive.

That’s generally the route i believe is best. Soft, cooling on the top but also supportive. If you want a bed to feel hard on the top it’s preference but with a properly built bed it definitely can feel very soft yet somehow you dont sink far into the bed.
