Need Help Choosing Between Protectors

I’m so in love with my Dunlop latex mattress and its soft bamboo cover that I think I need to add a little something in the way of protection so nothing untoward happens to damage something I love so much.

I’ve ruled out most of the options. So far, all I’ve done is add an extra bottom sheet in the form of a bamboo fitted sheet beneath my Tencel bottom sheet. I’ve considered adding yet another bottom sheet - a jersey knit - and hoping that’s enough. I really don’t want to change the feel of the latex bed any more than can be avoided, because the feel of it comes so close to my notion of perfect as it is.

What I am considering (even while knowing all are on the expensive side to me, after just having spent $1800 on the mattress) are the St. Dormeir wool, the Organic Cotton Knit Mattress Protector by Suite Sleep, and
the https://www.cozypure.com/mattress-pads-toppers/organic-cotton-matelasse-knit-mattress-protector, all of which I’ve seen mentioned favorably here.

My biggest question is - which of these would have the least influence on the feel of the mattress? I wouldn’t do anything but for being old enough to know that no matter how careful one is, “stuff” happens. I don’t want anything to damage the mattress, but on the other hand, I don’t want to lose the feel of the mattress.

I wish I could find a very soft stretchy bamboo cover, but the only ones I’ve found seem to be filled with one thing or another, and have poly backing, and I’m just not interested in those.

The only disappointment I’ve encountered with my bed was finding the tag on the cover that reads “made in China” - but I still love the cover, it feels great, and if you can find a household in this country that’s completely devoid of made in China labels, I’d be surprised.

Long story short - of my three options that I named, which would help protect the mattress yet interfere the least with the feel of the latex? Or certainly, if there’s a good/better option I’ve overlooked, a point in that direction would be appreciated.

Hi Clawdia,

I haven’t tried either of the ones you linked but both of them are thicker stretch knit cotton and would have little effect on the 'feel" of your mattress. They would be similar to a jersey sheet. They would be “moisture absorbing” so would protect against normal body fluids under most conditions but wouldn’t protect as well against larger accidents.

The Dormier is also fairly stretchy but is quilted with wool and thicker so it would be “moisture resistant” and do a better job of protecting against accidents but would also have a little more effect on the “feel” of the mattress.

When you are down to fine details with the differences between different products that you aren’t familiar with I would normally suggest calling and talking with some retailers that carry them and have first hand knowledge to get a better sense of which one may be best for you. There may be someof the members here that own one of these that may see your post and provide some feedback but I think that most people that order any of these would be happy with their choice.

That’s pretty much exactly what I was hoping for, some feedback from people who have experience with any of these and a latex bed - best comparison, of course, would be from someone with a soft Dunlop bed.

I’m pretty good right now at knowing lots of protectors I don’t want, but not being able to really see things like this before buying makes things difficult for me. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has a hard time deciding on the fine tweaks when it comes to things like this.

Another ‘tweak’ I’d like to make is to get away from my metal headboard to something soft and cushiony - and then I realized all the headboards I see are full of polyfoam, which I’ve just managed to get out of my bedroom thanks to the new mattress that doesn’t even have fire retardant chemicals.

I guess if I get really ambitious I could buy some scrap latex and find someone capable of a DIY type headboard and use real latex and a natural fabric cover, but something tells me it sounds like a great project that won’t ever get done around here.

Getting old’s not much fun sometimes, although I’m never unaware that I do believe it beats the alternative.

Hi Clawdia,

Getting old is a state of mind … or at least that’s what I keep telling myself when my kids tell me they can’t believe how “old” I am … but you’re certainly right that it beats the alternative
