Need help choosing our mattress in Kuwait

Hi dear members, I am a new user from Kuwait in search of a good mattress for my wife and I. I have been lurking on the forum and learning valuable information for a while, however, I have to say information provided in retailers here in Kuwait are EXTREMELY limited. I know information provided in the US is not sufficient either but believe me you guys are super lucky compared to us

The salespeople don’t even know the layering of the mattresses and I feel lucky when I see a diagram attached on the mattress by the manufacturer (mostly imported ones). Even in the ‘high-end’ retailers, salesperson can only say ‘this has pocketed springs and memory foam/latex on top’. Definitely nothing about the thickness or type of foams let alone the density. They have zero knowledge about anything useful. So what I have at most is just diagrams and possibly more details in the US/Europe websites for the imported mattresses from there (model names are usually different too).

We probably tried 100+ mattresses last two weeks and tried to choose our Top 5 to share here and get opinion from more experienced and knowledgeable people here. My wife and I lied on the beds for at least 15 minutes and in three different branches if available. The ones I am listing are the ones we felt more comfortable with good amount of support. I know the information you will see is highly limited, but this is exactly why you guys’ input are extremely valuable for novices like us.

Some details before going onto the mattresses:

⁃ I am 5 foot 10 and 160 lbs, my wife is 5 foot 1 and 108 lbs.
⁃ I am mostly back sleeper, my wife is a back sleeper + occasionally sleeps on her side.
⁃ We are looking for a king size bed with around a max budget of $3300 (around 1000 Kuwaiti Dinars).
⁃ The prices here are around 20% higher for same/similar models in the US.
⁃ We prefer mattresses that have innersprings. We don’t like fully foam mattresses like Tempur (one of the only higher price range brands available here).
⁃ We tried local manufacturers too. Unfortunately they don’t sell high-end mattresses, the maximum they go for king size is $1000 and they are mostly foam only. We really wanted to like them but unfortunately didn’t.
⁃ We tend to like medium and medium firm mattresses more with some exceptions. But we don’t like very soft and very firm mattresses.

Here are our options and details/screenshots if available: (main imgur album link that I will refer to below)

  1. American Star - Adelaide. It says medium but it feels at least medium firm. This mattress had good enough comfort with great support. Quality feels good, I believe American Star - Cleopatra is a similar model sold in the US and other countries (Retailer said the ‘Adelaide’ model is exclusive to them). King size price: $2800

Description provided on the retailer's website

The all natural Latex mattress with natural ventilation feature, provides the best support for any position sleeper. This superior support helps keep your spine naturally straight and promotes better health. This mattress also feature 1” Temperature Sensitive Foam (Memory Gel Foam) adjusts and molds to the weight and shape of your body, significantly reducing pain and discomfort associated with disruptive sleep. Topped with Bamboo fabric which has anti-bacterial properties so essential for healthy hygiene breathing and sleeping.

  1. Aireloom - Streamline Firm (one of the only known ones but a bit over our budget). It feels medium. Not as comfortable as the other top 5 but at least quality is known and has good support. Streamline Plush is also available but it felt too soft to us. This is the only mattress available at +$3000 price-range except Tempur mattresses. King size price: $4500

  1. Yatsan - Splendid M. This one was very comfortable with okayish support but honestly felt like the least durable one during testing (which could be highly misleading ofc). Feel is medium to medium-soft. A little more detail is available on Yatsan’s Europe website. It is an innerspring mattress with a thick visco pillowtop. King Size price: $1900

  2. Kingsdown - Prime Kelgate. This one was very comfortable for both of us with good support. Feeling is medium. Materials seems kinda cheap though? (from the import label). The retailer for this one is a very reputable and old Kuwaiti store (mostly known for furniture adn kitchen equipment). They only sell Kingsdown as a mattress brand. This was the only mattress that had coil on the sides and even in the eurotop section. Not sure if it means good or bad but was interesting. King size price: $2000

  1. Westin Heavenly Mattress. This one is also another infamous mattress from what I see online. It has a medium soft feeling and sold in Pottery Barn in one of the malls here. I had to include this because we found this very very comfy. The support was okay at best but not bad like other plush/softer mattresses. I believe this one will get eliminated easily due to being overpriced but of course you guys have the final say  King size price: $2700

To conclude, I am aware that most of this list are not the highest quality but we have to choose from what’s available here, so if you can help identify the better ones (quality/durability aspect) we would be very happy. Thank you very much for your precious time and efforts.

Hi ReadBooks (nice name!)

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Sounds like you have quite the challenge. Sometimes, you really only can work with what you’ve got!

While obviously we can’t speak to you in terms of comfort and support (only you will know for sure which bed offers you the best of both) I am happy to chat to the durability of the beds you’ve listed, as best I can.

This being a latex bed means by nature it’s going to be a more durable option. Without knowing the density of the 1" of memory foam, I can’t speak for certain to the durability of that particular layer. The good news is it’s just 1" and not, say, 3" that would be much more problematic if it were to suffer premature breakdown. Do you know if the layers are glued together? If not, it would be easy to swap that layer out if needed in the future.

Like you said, this mattress is sort of known to be pretty durable. You could add a topper to the firm to soften it up if you chose this route.

If it feels cheap, stay away! The price point is telling as well.

It’s good this one felt nice for both of you. That’s an important data point! Again, it’s hard to speak to the durability without know the foam density. That said, you both are light weight people. You’re not going to see as advanced/rapid breakdown of mattress materials as someone with a heavier profile.

This is a huge advantage, honestly. You CAN get away with a mattress using the “bare minimum” in terms of durability because your bodies aren’t going to “damage” the foam as quickly, unless you’re like aggressively jumping on the bed for fun. So, if this bed feels good to you, I’m not going to say to stay away.

It sounds like you don’t love this mattress. Regardless of durability, a mattress is a massive expense and as my dad likes to say “if you don’t love it, don’t buy it.”

I hope this helps. I’m happy to continue chatting through your concerns!

NikkiTMU

Hi NikkiTMU, thank you for your welcome and providing good information. Upon further discussion with my wife, we have now narrowed our options to 3, removing Westin and Yatsan mattresses. We will probably need to remove the Aireloom too due to its price but I still keep it for now

This mattress actually has only half an inch of latex layer, the description on the website is badly worded (I think it wants to say that thin layer is 100% natural). I also included an imgur album link in my original post which might have escaped your eyes, but the actual diagram of this mattress is included there. It has pocketed coils then foam and latex combination topped with bamboo quilting. It would be great if you could have a look at those pictures which might give a clearer idea to you about our top5 mattresses.

From the 3 options left, I can rate their comfort and support like this:

American Star - Adelaide:
Comfort 8.5/10
Support 9/10

Aireloom - Streamline Firm:
Comfort 7/10
Support 8.5/10

Kingsdown - Prime Kelgate:
Comfort 9.5/10
Support 7.5/10

Considering your first comment, it will be a tough choice between Adelaide and Prime Kelgate mattresses for us. But if you can provide any insight once seeing the diagrams and mattresses, we might be able to choose the correct one. Definitely no pressure on you
