I have been doing lots of research into building a perfect mattress and now that I have started purchasing layers and components I think I have screwed up.
So far I have an 8 inch foundation with legs from Ironwood Bedframes, The cotton and wool quilted mattress cover from Foam Sweet Foam (FSF,) one layer of Latex 3" medium ILD 34, and one layer of Latex 3" soft ILD 19 both are from Sleep on Latex. I added this all to an old junky 6 inches of HD foam taken from a Walmart mattress that I took the 2 inches of memory foam off of leaving it as a chunk of 6 inch hard foam.
I’m experiencing two problems. But first I’ll put in my details. I’m 160lbs and 5"10" male who likes to sleep on my sides only. I have never had any joint or back problems my whole life. I can sleep on the ground with a thin pad and dug out hips and shoulders. No problem. Also I have never owned a mattress that I chose, I’ve always just taken what ever bed was available when I was a kid or in the military, or when I was married and the wife chose. So I’ve never had an issue. Until now.
The first problem is i tried several layers on top of the 6" foam and nothing was comfortable and caused back pain. Tried a 3" cooling foam from Kohl’s, 3" Medium Titanflex topper, then I found sleep on Latex so I tried the 3" Medium and that felt amazing but to me rock hard. The website reads Medium is 34ILD and soft is 19ILD. So I ordered the soft to go on the Medium and the quilted cotton and wool cover for it. Now I fell that the soft is soft enough but it feels like I bottom out fast on the harder layers below and the quilted top may not be as comfortable as I imagine and dream it would be as it seems to push back on me to hard in the ribs. Now I have a cover 13" (12 inch plus 1 inch quilted top) 6 inches of hard foam, 3 inches of latex medium, and 3 inches of latex soft and I still feel like I’m sleeping on something that pushes into my ribs but soft at first then rock hard after. Should I just wrap everything up and send it all back or what can I do to fix the stiffness (first problem) and push back (second problem) from the quilted top? Thank you for any suggestions.
