Hi all, I’m back again on the hunt for a mattress that will actually work for us…
Here’s our situation:
• Me: 165 lbs, side and stomach sleeper. I initially thought I liked a firmer mattress, but I’ve realized I actually need a softer top for pressure point relief—especially for my shoulders and hips. At the same time, it can’t be too soft where my lower back collapses.
• Husband: 180 lbs, side sleeper. He prefers a firmer surface, but as a side sleeper, he also needs some pressure point relief for his shoulders and hips.
Current struggles:
• We bought a Beautyrest Black C-Class (Medium)—initially too firm for me, so I added a memory foam topper, which made it tolerable but too hot.
• Now, after four years, it’s sagging where I sleep, causing lower back pain.
• We tried the DLX Classic Medium—too firm for me, leading to bad neck, back, and hip pain.
• Added a 2” soft Sleep On Latex topper—too soft for my husband, and I had some lower back pain.
• Switched to a 3” medium Dunlop Sleep On Latex topper—better, but I still have slight lower back pain and flip around a lot.
• Motion transfer is bad—I wake up when my husband moves. He also finds the setup too bouncy and still too soft.
• We have a Serta Motion Series adjustable foundation.
• After testing different setups, we think the feel of latex doesn’t work for us—the bounce causes too much partner disruption.
We need a mattress that:
Is soft enough for my shoulders and hips but supportive enough for my lower back.
Provides pressure relief but also works for my husband, who prefers a firmer feel.
Doesn’t sleep hot.
Has good motion isolation (so I’m not waking up every time my husband moves).
We were considering exchanging our mattress for the DLX Premiere Hybrid Split Firmness in Medium for me / Firm for my husband. However, the rep from DLX mentioned the mattress may still not have adequate motion isolation due to the way the springs are individually wrapped. That said, I suspect our motion issue is a cumulative problem with the bouncy DLX Classic mattress and latex topper, so I’m not sure the Premiere Hybrid would be a bad option.
Tried my old Beautyrest Black C-Class again last night, and my lower back is currently screaming—I need help!
There has to be something out there that works! Any recommendations?
