Yesterday we were in a local furniture store getting replacement cushions for our couch. As the order was being written up, we noticed Kingsdown beds right next to us. Years ago in a B&B they had a Kingsdown mattress and it was the best I have ever slept. We loved the cushy but supportive feel of the Passions Beckingham Plush, and it was reasonable at $1,500 but I see on here everyone thinks they are sub-par and they don’t disclose their materials. And the store didn’t offer a trial period which feels like an expensive crapshoot to take.
I am 5’3", 110 lbs, with multiple back issues - scoliosis, degenerative disk disease mostly lumbar, cervical stenosis and piriformis syndrome which is compression of the sciatic nerve so I needs good pressure point relief. My husband doesn’t care what he sleeps on.
I tend to like soft but know it’s not the best for spinal alignment, and presents a sagging problem down the road. We have an old Serta Auburn Falls (long story) that was a swap - medium firm - but it’s too firm for me. We had a Dunlop topper - 3" from Sleep on Latex and it was still waking up in pain. We ended up getting a topper from Coop which is baffled memory foam/polyfill, which has taken away my low back pain, but I still can’t sleep on my piroformis side without some pain.
I don’t want a full latex bed or a full memory foam bed. I thought I wanted a hybrid but I am worried about foam breakdown. I’ve been going around in circles for two years and am tired. Most beds are too firm for me. I don’t want a firm bed. I want a supportive bed to maintain spinal alignment, but some cush for pressure points and just general comfort as I don’t sink much due to my size. We went away on vacation and the bed was so hard it was like sleeping on the floor. We got little sleep all week.
I really didn’t want a “bed in a box” as I read that can compromise the bed. The more I read, the more I think a “flippable” mattress might be good for us. I think DLX has one, as well as Sleep EZ, maybe Engineered Sleep. One that allows different firmness on each side would be ideal.
I’m at the point I’m thinking I’m just going to have to buy a bed that feels good and expect it to last a year and get a new one every year. I also considered whether I should just get a quality support (but not firm) innerspring rather than a hybrid that might degrade. I dislike having to use a topper but if that’s what it comes to to get what I need, so be it.
I hope you get a response from someone with more knowledge, I too am here posting a few requests for help but things are quiet around here.
So far the best advice here I have found for two side sleepers and my wife who is on the petite side as well was the Arizona Premium Mattress Eco Sleep Hybrid Mattress. The main reason being it uses the Leggett and Platt innersprings and specifically the Quantum Edge Elite Bolsa springs which the owner of APM says is better for side sleepers vs the other springs they make. You can then choose the Latex comfort layer you want, which someone with more experience could suggest but I would think the #19 Plush given your weight. You can also request one side to be firmer for your husband.
My wife and I are likely going with this model and the #19 once I get a few more questions answered and plan to add 2" or 3" featherbed on top of the mattress but under the fitted sheet to add more of the feel we like.
Thanks so much! I’ve correspondd with Ken and he is great. My hesitation is no trial and the return policy. I hope the bed works for you. Ken is very accommodating and it seems like a great product.
I am pretty sure they offer a 60 day return minus shipping costs if you do not like it. I am trying to make sure it is the right choice for us though first before placing the order, so much to learn with this industry.
I am 5’2" and have multiple musculoskeletal health issues. I know you say you don’t want all latex and it sounds like you had a bad experience with a Dunlop topper. Dunlop is too dense for a topper for someone of your size - it doesn’t conform enough (or likely at all as tiny as you are). My mattress is three layers of Dunlop (firm, medium, soft) but I just added a separate topper of medium Talalay and it is divine. You are a “featherweight” so you might even go for soft Talalay. At 130, medium is enough support for my spine (osteoporosis) but I don’t even know that my heels, hips and shoulder blades are touching it. I can even sleep on a bad shoulder. After three years of expensive and uncomfortable mistakes, this has been such a relief. All mattress components are from LMF, on an adjustable Ergomotion base purchased locally.
Petite side sleeper here, who just FINALLY found my mattress match.
I plan to write a post singing the praises of
Comfort Option mattresses soon, but your post caught my eye.
I didn’t think I wanted an all memory foam mattress and tried everything else. If I could turn back the clock I would do things very differently and save myself months of pain and terrible sleep.
They have a quiz to match you to the right layers of foam, helpful support person, great quality foams and will swap out layers for 120 days until you are happy.
So far, I don’t think I’ll need to make any changes, which is amazing!
I just need to find a mattresses protector that is stretchy enough to not change the feel of the bed at all!
Best of luck!
LMF is Latex Mattress Factory. Very knowledgable and helpful, prices very fair. Love my adjustable base but since they are designed for an average height of about 5’8" the bends are a little too far apart for me. I’ve done custom settings that are a bit less than zero-G, scoot down a bit and it’s very comfortable. I didn’t think I needed lumbar support, but I really like it. I used to toss and turn more than I slept - now I can go at least four hours without moving a muscle
