Need help softening up a firm Tempurpedic mattress

Hi — I’m new to the forum, been searching high and low to find some help with my mattress issues. First To list a few things that may help you guys steer me into the right direction

Side Sleeper

I have a king size Tempurpedic pro-adapt firm mattress, with the Tempurpedic pro-mid side sleeper pillow, which I’ve had now for about 16 months. Some nights I sleep totally fine, but then on many other nights, I sleep like hell. Toss and turn all night due to my lower back stiffening up, my hip, shoulder and elbow joints begin to ache, and the feeling I get is the feeling like I have to let out a great big stretch, which happens multiple times of the night. The mattress I had before this one, was a luxury firm beautyrest, but I felt as though it was too soft, bc I began constantly having back problems(the start of my back issues). I tried it with a latex topper and then I tried it without the latex topper, but in both instances, my back would not agree with it. So I got rid of it, and felt that I needed a more firm mattress. So I got my current Pro Adapt firm mattress. It feels good at first, but the longer I lay down, that’s when it seems like my body begins to basically reject it…

I’m certain that I’m out of the warranty phase, so taking it back isn’t an option, and it’s too expensive to just get rid of it and try something different. Is there anything I can do to have a better experience when laying down? Can I soften it up? Should I soften it up?

Hey sharperw,

Welcome to TMU  ! Thanks for joining in and for your patience while awaiting response to your question.

I am sorry to hear about the variety of pressure point pains that you’re experiencing, sharperw; indeed, it does sound like you’re “sleeping like hell”. How far into your 16 months with the ProAdapt did this become an ongoing problem? The Tempur ProAdapt firm mattress is a 12" model, quite firm in feel, featuring 3 layers of their proprietary foams and in a zippered, washable cover. Perhaps a memory foam/ all-foam/ firm mattress is too drastic a change from your previous firm Beautyrest mattress?

I’m guessing that the Beautyrest Luxury firm was a pocketed coil + memory foam mattress; is this correct? You mention “constantly having back problems/ the start of your back issues” with this mattress; how long were you sleeping on it when those began? When diagnosing spinal alignment concerns, it’s a good idea to get a look at how your body is interacting with the mattress using visual aids. You can get some help from a friend or use the timer on your smart phone and take some pics while in your side sleeping position to see how your body placement looks. Be sure and use your pillows as you normally would to simulate how your body engages with them too. From those, you can better diagnose what the mattress corrections could be made and whether adding a topper could improve the mattress’s comfort feel.

You may need to add some softness for a bit more sink into the mattress, depending on how things look once you experiment with the picture-taking suggestion above. Have you reached out to Tempurpedic for their thoughts on how to remedy your situation? Have you tried something different since your post? Hoping that you find more restful sleep soon… .

Thanks,
Sensei
