I’m a 190 lbs, 5’9" male. Side sleeper. I like medium firm to firm. I also tend to run hot when I sleep, so want something that would be relatively cool.
So my current mattress is probably like 12 years old or so, I think. Definitely sagging a bit in the middle, and I think some of my recent lower back pain is because of it.
I’ve done a little looking around, and so far I’ve liked, in order of preference… I’m looking for a Queen but would also be happy with a Full.
-Obasan Grand ($3800)
-Mlily Powercooler Medium Firm ($2200 for Queen)
-Beautyrest L class Firm (~$2400 for Queen)
So these are quite expensive. I was hoping to spend <$1200, maybe $1500 at most.
Questions:
-
are there less expensive beds that would give me similar feels to these?
-
what about DIY? Worth it?
-
What about just adding a thick latex or other topper to my current bed? I say latex because I really liked Obasan and I believe it’s latex-based.
Hi laminate; welcome to the Mattress Underground!
In answer to 1. I’m slightly confused with you wanting a bed that has the feel of the Obasan Grand, but also saying that you prefer medium firm to firm. It’s a wonderful, comfortable mattress but has a soft top layer and a removable plush topper.
As you probably know, the Grand is customizable, so you can make most of the layers as firm as you wish, except for the 2" soft topper on top. It also comes with a 3.5" wool/latex topper - so the feel is more luxurious, but certainly could be designed to be firm underneath the top layer.
We have a private label called the Hudson which is made of latex, layers are wrapped, good quality, and has a firm feel to it, but the price point may be more to your liking at 2299 for a full size, and it is on sale through July 9. Queen would be more, of course. If that looks too firm, the Hudson can also be sold with a topper.
And for #3 - I know sometimes people add a topper to protect a mattress or try to extend its life. If a mattress is sagging, not sure how well it would work. Perhaps you can try looking at a few stores near you and see how you like a latex topper. Lay it on a softer mattress in the showroom and see how it feels to you.
I don’t know about DIY, but many people around here do. If you go to the welcome page and type DIY in the box, many discussions will pop up.
Good luck with your search! Sorry to hear you have been experiencing back pain; hopefully you will find the support level you need to take care of your back.
