Need suggestions for mattresses

I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed with the number of options out there so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. My wife and I would prefer to have a ‘pre-built’ mattress although if it comes to it we are not opposed to DIY. I am 5’10", 165 lbs. Probably 70% side, 20% back, 10% stomach. My wife is 5’1", 145 lbs, and likely 70% side and 30% back. I sleep a bit hot as well. We like the idea of a more natural mattress, so latex is interesting. We went to one store to try latex but the only latex mattress there was pretty firm given our heights and weights, but I’m not sure on the specs on it and don’t want to be turned off from latex based on that. We both like a softer mattress based on what we tried (probably because we are mainly side sleepers, not too heavy), my wife is targeting that luxury plush feel. We are coming from a cheap memory foam mattress from wayfair, it’s fine but too firm for us.

I’ve been piecing together a basic mattress for DIY. We are unsure whether we will like the feel of latex so we are also considering a memory foam top. Compared to our full foam mattress, the idea of latex being a bit “bouncier” seems like it could be a good thing. I think my concern lies in the return policies if we get it wrong and how much swapping out we may have to do and what that would cost in the end. Here is where we started:

3" Talalay, 19 ILD or 3", 4 lb memory foam top
3" Dunlop, 28 ILD transition
3" Dunlop, 38 ILD support

So my 2 questions are,

  1. If we go DIY, does the above setup seem reasonable? Would getting both a talalay latex and memory foam top be sufficient to possibly mitigate the feel of latex if we don’t love it? I understand there is no guarantee since everyone is different but I’m trying to get is in with a reasonable start.
  2. We would still prefer a pre-built, but I’m having trouble narrowing it down. I’m worried the hybrid/coil mattresses may be too firm based on our BMIs? I know they can come in soft versions as well but I’ve read coils tend to make a mattress feel more firm. Would we need to look for full poly/memory foam or latex mattresses? There are a lot of good companies on this site it seems but do any mattresses stand out as potential options for us?

Thanks and happy to add any additional detail I can to help.

I’m bumping this up again, hoping someone can provide some feedback. Thank you!

Hi moon32.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

I think a soft/medium/firm (top to bottom) configuration would be a great fit for both you and your wife. 19 ILD borderlines on VERY soft, and you did mention your wife is after that “luxury plush feel” so that could be the way to achieve it. Since I’m unable to feel what you and your wife feel on a mattress in terms of alignment and support, it’s hard for me to say “definitely yes!” to any ILD as far as comfort layers are concerned.

Have you considered a site like SleepEZ that lets you do a personalized configuration based on height/weight? Buying a ready-to-use mattress can help eliminate some of the concern surrounding return policies. You may also want to look into DIY Mattress which walks you through step by step and then sells your your DIY components. You could contact them to see what their exchange/return policy is on the separate layers.

If you can afford to and want to, then I say go for it. It can’t hurt to have two options to test.

SleepEZ as mentioned above, and other full-foam options that come to mind are…Nest Bedding’s Finch Natural Latex, Luma’s all latex Slumber System and the mattresses at Arizona Premium.

I hope this helps!
