Nest Sparrow vs GhostBed Flex Hybrid

Hi TMU enthusiasts,

Newly married couple looking to make our first mattress purchase. For reference, our measurements are:
Him: 5’10", 175lbs, BMI ~25
Her: 5’6", 120lbs, BMI ~19.5
Both side sleepers predominantly with some back sleeping (so a bit of combo).

After learning a TON through the TMU guides and information, I was able to visit some mattress stores in the Washington D.C. area to narrow our preferences and use that information to find TMU trusted member products that we might like. D.C. does not have a lot of great options available so we settled on visiting a Sleepare store and while we did not love most of the offerings, we were able to find some preferences and did find great comfort in the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.

In my education on TMU, I understand that offerings from TMU trusted members are likely to be higher quality than something like Helix would offer. In looking through density information on foams used by Helix when compared to TMU trusted companies, it does seem like there are some better options (even if Helix isn’t necessarily bad). Recognizing the comfort we found with the Helix Midnight Luxe, I have narrowed down the TMU trusted member options to two that I was hoping for a double check on from the community as well as any guidance folks could provide to help us decide between the two.

Those two mattresses are the Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid and the GhostBed Flex Hybrid. We identified these two options as candidates due to a similar material construction to the Midnight Luxe, but with better quality (denser) foams that Helix offers. The intangibles of the trial period of the Nest certainly stand out, but the Ghostbed Flex price is certainly appealing. Both seem to offer a medium firmness style mattress with a memory foam-like comfort layer that we seem to love while maintaining a great support layer that should last. If anyone could help ensure we are on the right track and/or guide us even further, we would greatly appreciate it!

Hi, purzick,
Congratulations to the Newlyweds!!!
Welcome to TMU :grinning:

So, your first instinct about the Helix, is it is a nice mattress, good all-around player, fits right in to your BMI’s and the luxe version will be on the medium side leaning soft rather than firm (as it will soften a bit in the first month or two).

The Nest Sparrow is a sort of a sister mattress to the Helix, but with the distinct advantage of an interchangeable comfort layer. This could prove to be a deal breaker in what will be your first mattress purchase together. The medium will be just on the softer side of the medium and the firm is a softer firm.

The GhostBed Flex Hybrid will have a similar feel to the Sparrow firm. Both should offer you that plushy memory foam feel with a bit of a bounce in the GBFH.

What you need to consider when making any mattress purchase is how do any mattress fit in with your PPP’s, sleep position, and longevity. On the purchasing side you have to consider what I call the 4R’s. Return, Restocking, Refund and Reputation. This is true whether you buy direct, chain or independent.

Keep in mind what you have learned in TMU tutorials regarding the various foams, densities and characteristics of each. Remember it all starts with a great support layer and you need to compare each mattress side by side (on your pc screen) layer by layer and be certain each one makes sense to you and is functioning for the purpose of your PPP’s.

No one can tell you which one you like. It is always best, when possible, to narrow down as you have, but take a break and evaluate again a day or so later to see if you are as enthused about the choices as you were in your first round of elimination. Don’t just spend 5 minutes on each, spend 20-25 minutes on each.

Evaluating mattresses with memory foam is a bit different than other materials. Particularly heat sensitive memory foam. The more you lay on it, the more it will contour to your body. So please do spend some time on each to evaluate that 20 minutes or so that it takes to fall asleep.

Take into account things will soften up a bit. All foams, from polyurethane to latex will soften over time. Usually with latex that softening can be front loaded, so you will feel more in the first month or so. Most memory foams tend to feel firmer in the showroom than they do when you get them home and sleep on them for a while. It is always best in my option to lean toward the firmer side of things rather than the softer side.

Toppers can always be used to soften, add plushness, additional pressure relieve and longevity to a mattress. If your mattress starts off too soft or becomes too soft, it is a challenge to step up the firmness if interchangeable layers are not an option.

Hopefully this has given you some food for thought as you move into your next chapter of life. Since both of the current contenders are Trusted Members here, rest assured that they are always here if you have specific questions about their products, plus their products and practices are scrutinized by TMU for transparency and integrity.

I linked each of the mattresses for easy comparison.
Nest Sparrow Don’t forget to use TMU9 if you choose the Nest (plus Rakuten is offering an additional 5% if you go that route)

And the GhostBed Flex Hybrid GhostBed Flex Hybrid looks like TMU members get 30% off unless their current promotion is better.

Best of luck to you both! Congratulations and Happy New Year!
