I have been reading posts here for a couple of months now, and I want to say thanks to everyone who has posted on this site. The information is great, and I have learned more about latex mattresses here than most salespeople seem to have from years of selling mattresses. we (my wife and I) are almost ready to purchase a latex mattress, but we want to be certain before we do. We have narrowed it down to Flobed or Sleep EZ due to the apparent value and multiple configurations both companies seem to offer. We still have a couple of question though, and we hope they can be answered. After reading a post from the other day about not being able to buy part of a mattress because of the federal fire code, We are wondering if years later we would still be able to purchase individual layers for our particular mattressas long as it was from the dealer we had purchased the mattress from in the first place? This thought comes from the idea that the top layers may wear out before the support layers and would be more cost effective that buying a whole other mattress. Another question is, has anyone went with a mattress with a separate topper for the flexabilty of using the topper in their camper? We like the thought of a separate topper that we can throw on top of our cheap foam mattress while camping. This would allow us to still enjoy the comfort of latex without haveing to buy a whole new mattress for the camper? Thanks again for all the great information on this site. My wife and I purchased a Sleep EZ 10,000 with a topper. You can read what fit our PPP here. We did not purchase it for use in a camper but I feel it simulates a pillow top better and we prefer that feel.
You would need to decide if a topper would work for your PPP as Phoenix describes it. Also just remember that a topper over the foam in the camper will feel different than it over another latex mattress.

There is no problem buying individual layers and you could purchase them from either the original manufacturer or a wide range of other suppliers. Individual layers are not subject to the fire regulations.
You’re right that the top layers of a mattress are more subject to weak and tear and will tend to soften or break down faster than the deeper layers and as you mentioned one of the advantages of a component mattress (or a separate topper) is that you can replace individual layers if necessary (including if your needs or preferences change as well) without having to replace the entire mattress.
Having a separate topper on top of a mattress will change the feel vs having the same layer inside the mattress cover but this would be a matter of personal preference. There is more about this in this thread and in posts #3 and #4 here.
As CentralPA also mentioned … a topper on top of a “cheap foam mattress” will be very different from a latex mattress but it can certainly be a good idea for a camper as long as the combination works well for you in terms of PPP.

Thanks for clearing up the issue about separate component purchases. We am just trying to cover all the bases. The last time we bought a mattress, it was like playing roulette. (and we picked the wrong number)
We have a 4" memory foam topper from walmart on top of our camper foam mattress, and it seems to work ok (way better than our bedroom mattress we are on now) so it was just a thought that it would still be better than the memory foam topper. What can I say, I’m trying to be thrifty.
We have researched enough to know what type of latex we want, and we believe that either of the two companies mentioned will provide us with that latex. The biggest concern we have with buying a mattress online is the fact that we cannot see, and feel the quality of the mattress covers Flobeds, and Sleep EZ provides with thier mattresses. We were able to try a Savvy Rest in person, and thought their covers were very nice, with good zippers. Savvy rest also had a nice mattress with a separate topper that I thought made it feel wonderful. We just do not want to spend quite that much on a mattress. Both of them use good quality cotton covers quilted with wool but you aren’t alone in feeling the “risk” of an online purchase so perhaps more importantly they both have good exchange and return policies as well which can reduce the “risk” of any online purchase when you can’t see or feel what you are buying ahead of time.

I wanted to give an update on the mattress shopping. We ordered the Organic 10000 from Sleep EZ, along with the Talalay topper encased in a zippered cotton/wool cover. The mattress is scheduled to arrive Friday this week. I found the ordering experience with Sean to be quite easy, and straightforward. The whole process was done over the phone in a very short time. He was willing to answer any questions I had, although due to the fact I found this forum, I already new what we wanted/neeeded. I also want to tell everyone about Sleep EZ customer service to this point. The next morning after ordering, I received an email containing the invoice, along with a tracking number! Later on that day, I also received a phone call to inform me the order had been processed, shipped, and given a chance to ask any more questions if needed!!! All I can say is wow, that is great personal customer service. I have never had anyone call me with information on an order unless there was a problem. I want to thank everyone on this forum for taking the time to write in with their experiences. The feedback from all the people here has been really helpful. I also want to thank Phoenix for all the time and work he has put into this site. I will keep everyone updated on our experience with the mattress after we get it setup. Thanks Marc

Congrats on your new mattress.
I have used my thread to keep a running track on how the mattress feels with the layers we chose. From following some other threads, I have realized the value of keeping notes on how the mattress is feeling in case an adjustment needs made. I am sure you are excited and anxious for your new mattress.
If Sean didn’t warn you about also getting a mattress protector you might want to consider this as if any stains get on the mattress cover it could void the warranty. If you didn’t read it in my thread we purchased the St Dormier Mattress protector and you can read my experience with it on post #29. There are other great mattress protectors out there and you can search the forum as I did for additional information on types of mattress protectors if you feel the need for one.

Our new mattress From Sleep EZ came yesterday as scheduled. Setup was quite simple and easy. I used pine 1x4 boards 80" long, and run them perpendicular to the support slats that was previously install on our bed frame.The original slats have adjustable support legs installed in the center area, allowing for great support of the weight from the latex. I used some heavy ribbon my wife bought at the sewing store, and stapled the ribbon across the pine boards to hold them exactly 3" apart for proper spacing. The mattress covers, and zippers seem to be well made. The mattress is very nice, and after our first night sleep, neither one of us woke up with sore joints as we have been with our old mattress. I have pictures of the assembly I can post if anyone would like to see the progression. I just have not had time to upload onto the computer yet.
With all that aside, I am going to call Sleep EZ today to inquire about the Latex material used for the Latex/Wool topper we purchased. I was understanding that it was a 100% Talalay Latex topper. The only sticker I can find on the latex for the topper, says SOFT. The other components for the core of the main mattress came with stickers that tells the density, reference number, date manufactured, size, Inspected by, and says Latex Green. I thought Natural Talalay latex only came in a twin size at the largest width without a glued seam. This topper has no glued seams, no sticker informing that it is a green product, and no sticker informing us with a reference number, density, date of manufacture, or inspected by. This is why I’m wondering what it is made of.
I’m sure the topper is what we thought we were buying, I just want to be sure. Overall it has been a great experience, and my wife and I believe we will be very happy with our purchase. I will let everyone know what I find out on the Latex topper. Marc

Talalay is made in either a twin XL mold or a queen mold so if you have a queen it may not have a glue seam. Individual layers often only have either no sticker or only part of a sticker depending on where they were cut from the original core.
