New latex with many holes (not pinholes) - defective or normal?

Would appreciate getting some opinion about our latex layer. Bought and excitedly opened our latex mattress but found many misaligned holes over the entire layer. I asked to have it replaced, but was told these imperfections were normal. I’m worried it would affect the feel or durability of the layer. Appreciate any of your thoughts whether to push this issue.

Hi Cassyu.

Congratulations on your new latex mattress! :cheer:

Thanks for providing the photos. The feedback the seller provided to you is correct. Your photos show air pockets which are considered small imperfections and will not affect “the feel or durability of the layer”. As you correctly assumed, the regularly spaced holes from the mold vertical pins throughout the entire layer are normal.

When Dunlop latex foam cores are molded, the latex is poured into the mold until the mold is filled. Sometimes depending on the ambient temperature and humidity, some air remains trapped. These are usually small air pockets that migrate under pressure to the edges, trapped under the top surface of the mold, or even around the pins themselves. These do not affect the structural integrity and performance of the slab itself. You can find these air pockets in many products on the market, but because usually consumers receive finished and covered products consumers will never see how they look on the inside unless they cut open their mattress. These air pockets/irregularities are usually not having a structural/performance impact, Due to the two different production processes (Dunlop and Talalay) irregulars such as these are most commonly found in Dunlop. Depending on latex ILD, the 6-inch mold core can be cut horizontally into thinner latex layers that can be used as transition or comfort layers within a mattress.

Provided that your new mattress is a good match for you in terms of PP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) you’ll have many restful nights sleeping upon it.
