New mattress

Hi Phoenix, I live in Athens GA 30606, and i am hoping that you can help me with finding
the right piece for me. I recently looked at the Sealy Optimum, but after reading reviews, I have my doubts now.
I am also wondering between foam or coil matress? Thank you in advance.

Hi Slav007,

The first suggestion I would have is to make sure you have read post #1 here and the information it links to. This will give you all the basic information you will need to make some great choices. Perhaps even more importantly it will help you exclude most of the worst choices and help you know how to identify the better retailers and manufacturers who have the knowledge and experience to help you make good choices and will put your own interests above their own. Since a mattress is only as good as the construction and materials in it … the first and one of the most reliable sign of these is when they are willing and able to tell you and educate you about the details of every layer in a mattress they sell. if you ask this about the Sealy Optimum you will quickly find out that they have little idea of the quality or value of what they are selling.

The list of some of the better options and possibilities that is closest to you is centered in the Atlanta area and is in post #2 here. When I have the chance later tonight or perhaps tomorrow I’ll take a look in the Athens, GA area and see if anything shows up as a reasonable option or at least a possibility that is closer to you.

Phoenix

Thank you Phoenix,
I will take a look of post #2. Atlanta is not too far from Athens, and I think there will be more good choices there.
I will keep you inform when I get down to 3 choices.

Hi Slav007,

I haven’t forgotten you in Athens. I was very surprised because there are almost 60 different businesses that sell mattresses within about 45 miles of you and many of these have multiple outlets. It’s taken quite a few hours and longer than I thought it would (compared to most areas) to first find them all and then start sorting through them and talking to some of them to try to find some of the better options or possibilities.

Here’s the “rough” list of places that I’ve looked at and I’ll start to narrow it down and probably eliminate most of the list tomorrow (EDIT: the list is now replaced in the next post).

Phoenix

Hi Slav007,

OK … I’ve worked my through the list a bit and made quite a few calls and here is the whittled down version of the 60 or so retailers that are in the area (within about 50 miles or so).

I’ve included the ones that told me they would find out the specifications (including foam density) of all the layers in their mattresses if the manufacturer will provide it to them. I’ve also listed the brands I would look at with each retailer who typically would provide the information to their retailers (and I’ve excluded the brands that aren’t worth looking at).

There are a lot of retailers that are carrying American Bedding in the area (they also make Sterling & Thomas and Natures Way) which were just recently purchased by Corsicana but I talked with them and for the moment they are still providing this information to their retailers so they would be worth considering … and because there are many who carry them in the area they may also be more willing to match prices but I would be VERY careful to make sure you find out the quality of all the materials in any of their mattresses just in case Corsicana begins to use lower quality materials in the American Bedding mattresses.

So here is the list of 60 or so in about a 50 mile radius narrowed down considerably. I’ve also removed the list in my last post. I would always call a retailer first to talk with them both to make sure of the type of mattresses they have on the floor and to get a sense of how well you connect with them and their level or knowledge and service.
