So, our new mattress was delivered today, right on schedule after we ordered it last Thurs. The advantages of shopping locally. It’s 2 2 inch layers of natural dunlop latex over European pocket coils, with a organic cotton/wool cover. We ordered it from a local shop recommended from this site, Select Sleep mattress in Union City, CA. The cool thing is that they will customize each side, so DH has a firmer coil layer as his base layer, and mine is medium, and then we have a plush over medium latex layers. Mine feels good, DH thinks the latex layers feels a little soft, so it’s possible we’ll have to swap that. My only worry is that they are somewhat limited in terms of latex layers and only carried a plush and medium, and it’s possible they’ll have to order a firmer layer for him. The price was very good, $1700 for a Cal King, and they took away the fairly new Simmons piece of degraded foam crap for free. The box spring was still in fine shape, and one advantage of doing the pocket coils is that we could reuse that instead of getting a new foundation. They offer a six month free layer exchange policy.
Great Valli. :cheer: I will be very interested to see how this works for you. Lew
Hi Valli,
I’m looking forward to your feedback over time as well

So it’s only one night in, but it’s so comfortable! I slept better last night than I’ve slept in years. I’ll update as I go farther along, and also get DH’s report. It’s possible we may to swap one or both of his latex layers for a firmer ILD, but we’ll see. Our daughter lay down on it and loved it as well, although she said Mom’s side was much more comfortable.
So we’ve now been sleeping on the new bed for a few weeks, and I’m starting to sort out my impressions. Overall it’s much better than what we were sleeping on, and the good news is that DH is totally happy with his side, so I did a good job picking a firmness level that works for him. On my side, I like the medium firmness European pocket coils, but I’m not sure if the comfort levels are quite perfect yet. There are two layers of 2 inch dunlop natural latex, one plush (said 16 ild equivalent, but Dunlop is firmer than talalay) and one medium (they said 24 ild equivalent), but I feel like my hips are sinking in slightly more than my shoulders and that I might like a slightly softer layer on top. It’s much cooler than our old mattress, but I occasionally still wake up a little hot, and I think that might be our waterproof membrane mattress cover. I ordered a mulberry silk mattress topper, and I’m curious to see if that helps at all with heat or pressure points. I’ve also been tinkering with pillows. I have a plush cervical latex pillow that I got from European sleep works a few years ago, and that works well when I’m sleeping on my back. I need a higher loft pillow when I sleep on my side, and I ordered a higher profile Malouf firm zoned latex pillow, but that is slightly too high. I’m now thinking of trying their half soft/half firm pillow to see if that’s better. I also have a tempurpedic pillow designed specifically for side sleepers, but that seems a bit too hard.
If the topper and new pillow don’t work, I might see if Select Sleep Center can do an exchange for the top comfort layer, but they would probably have to special order a talalay latex layer if I want something softer. I’m very light weight (108 lb), but have hips (mini pear shape), so I tend to feel pressure points more than some other people would. Overall my experience with Select Sleep Center has been very good, but the only thing I was surprised by is that the latex layers are in a non-zippered cover, since the ones in the showroom had zippers I assumed ours would as well. Any suggestions are welcome.
Hi valli,
Thanks for the update.

The best suggestion of course is always to talk with the manufacturer who will be much more familiar with the options you have for fine tuning than anyone but I would also be a little cautious that you are making changes in response to actual “symptoms” rather than just a “feeling” that your hips are sinking in too far because with your body type this may be different from what you are used to but it could also be necessary for good alignment.
I hope you let us know how your pillow changes work out and how you like your new silk topper as well
