New mattress but can't get a single pillow to work

Recently purchased a Tempurpedic Adapt Medium Hybrid. A bit more firm than the mattress I had slept on for over two years, which was a hybrid mattress with a thin layer of latex on the top, with poly foam underneath and then innersprings. The old mattress was about two or three inches taller than my current Tempurpedic mattress. I’m primarily a back sleeper, though I do move to my side from time to time. I’m a 170 pound, 5/9 male with broad shoulders. I’ve always slept on a pretty low yet firm pillow, as anything too high causes me major neck pain, and anything too plush doesn’t give my neck the support I need. For the first few weeks on this Tempurpedic, I slept perfectly fine and had zero issues with pain or soreness. However, around the third week or so, I started waking up with terrible neck pain and pain in my lower and mid back. I figured that my pillow needed to be adjusted due to this mattress being more firm than my previous, and so I added more fill (I have an adjustable memory foam pillow). This didn’t help. I then removed tons of foam, each night removing a handful, to the point where my pillow was basically a pancake. Still didn’t help. I’ve started to notice intense shoulder pain when sleeping on my side, but any pillow I use that is high enough to alleviate this pain causes me neck pain when i turn to my back.

Is this an issue with my mattress still breaking in? I’ve had it for about 50 nights, and although the retailer has a 120 night return window, I’m seriously wondering about what kind of long term damage I can do to my back and neck if I continue to try and ride this out. I’ve already tried the whole crawling thing on my mattress, and I even removed the mattress cover I was using and have just been sleeping on two layers of thin fitted sheets.

My thinking is that I should try and get a softer mattress. The Tempurpedic ProAdapt Hybrid felt much softer in store, should I return for this model instead? That model has slightly more foam in the comfort layer, and I’m starting to think that I need more cushion from my mattress.

I would agree with your suggestion that the mattress might be breaking in since your neck pain didn’t start until 3 weeks in. Another suggestion is that your body has also gotten use to sleeping on the mattress and is either starting to relax better than it originally did or is starting to tense up and twitch through the night. Either way, it sounds like something has changed.

With your adjustable fill pillow, if you underfill it, could you stuff fill into the corners so that it is flat in the middle and higher on the edges so that you can be on your sides on the higher bits and on your back in the thinner section? This website has some neat pillows in that shape as well that I know many chiropractors use. https://www.coreproducts.com/collections/cervical-pillows
