New mattress mid back/rib pains after waking up

hello everyone,

New user here. Apologies if this is not in the correct category.

Hope somebody can help me cause I think I am losing my mind here.
After getting fed up waking up with shoulder/neck and lower back pains I bought a fancy (read expensive, at least for me) new mattress a couple of months ago (diff layers, zoned, etc).
Here is the link: https://www-premiove--matrace-cz.translate.goog/matrace-inova-soft/?_x_tr_sl=cs&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp
(google translated, I live in the Czech Rep.)

My shoulder/neck and lower back pains are gone but now I wake up with mid back (around my rib cage) muscle pain/stiffness that goes away after a short period of time in the morning.
It ranges from mild to really annoying depending on how much of the night I sleep on my sides (the more I sleep on my side the worse it is).

Hugging an extra pillow kind of helps but it doesn’t fix this new problem.

I bought the current one after days of searching and was recommended by the sales guy based on the problems I have. I can return it in the first 90 days.

The problem is I don’t know where to go from here. Do I need a firmer mattress, a softer one? Do I try pocket springs? Would a mattress topper help? Do I need a different pillow? (tried all the ones I had at home, same issue with all of them)
I like that it fixed my lower back pain but there has to be something out there that fits me better, right?

Thank you

Hi Loki.

Thanks for the question!

My immediate questions for you are:

  • Do you feel your back is “bending” or curving into the mattress when you sleep on your side?
  • Do you happen to carry more weight in your middle?
  • Alternatively, does it feel like that mattress pushes you away from it?

I think once we can figure out whether the bed is too soft OR too firm for your sleeping profile, we can troubleshoot from there.

hey NikkiTMU

I am a fairly normal/skinny person 177cm/68kg (5’8", 149 lbs).
It doesn’t feel like it is pushing me away.
I asked my wife to take some pictures and it looks to me that there is a small bend (scoop) in my lumbar region but I think that’s just because my shoulder area is wider (neck seems to be aligned). Based on the picture I would expect my lower back to be hurting but it never felt better. I don’t understand what is happening.
