New Mattresses vs Latex Topper

Hi! This is my first post and I home I am posting this correctly. I have two questions.

  1. My husband and I are in the market to either replace our old mattress or purchase a topper.

We are currently sleeping on a 10+ year old Beautyrest and it is no longer cutting it. We both experience back pain, but his is more severe as he is a former college athlete with herniated disc issues.

He is primarily a stomach sleeper and I am a side/back sleeper. He is about 220 lbs and I am 115 lbs. I prefer a softer mattress. He hates the feeling of being stuck in memory foam. We are both also very hot sleepers.

I was looking at purchasing a 3 inch soft topper from SleepOnLatex instead of buying an entire new mattress to save some money for the time being. Thoughts on if this would suffice?

If we were to get a new mattress, what would your recommendation be? I was looking at the Zoma Boost Hybrid Mattress because it is targeted to athletes, but I’m sure some of that is marketing BS. Should we be looking for a latex option? If we were getting a new mattress, we might need to wait a few months for cost since I am currently purchasing a new mattress for my daughter, which is the next question.

  1. I am looking to definitely purchase a twin mattress for my 9 year old that will hopefully last a long time. She is about 56 lbs. She is getting a new loft bed which requires the mattress to be between 5-8 inches. I was originally considering the Nest Puffin but it looks to be more firm and has a weight limit that she could outgrow as a teen. The Kiwi mattress from MGM looks awesome, it is a little more than I wanted to spend, but willing to stretch the budget if that is the best option.

Sorry for the long post- would appreciate any info/suggestions!

Hello misarisa, and welcome to the Mattress Underground!

First, for your 9-year-old - you are smart to try to find one that she will not outgrow, so I understand your concern about the weight limit. Firmness can sometimes be adapted using a topper. If you would consider a coil mattress, and if natural materials are important to you, Naturepedic has a Fourth of July sale going on now. Their 2-in-1 mattress would be in the same price range as the Kiwi - and their weight limit is high enough even to support through the teen years easily. Their mattresses come with a 25-year warranty, full for the first ten years, then pro-rated for the next 15. Definitely built to last.

Very sorry to hear that you are experiencing back pain. A topper may help or make it worse, so before purchasing one, it would be a good idea to try some out at a store in your area. From what you have written here, you may want to look at a mattress that could be customized by side so that your husband could have firmer and you could have softer. Finally, you may find that latex provides the cushion you need (either all-latex or hybrid with latex on top) and sometimes people find latex more breathable and responsive than memory foam. That may help with the sleeping hot issue - all-natural materials are also more breathable. Trying out a mattress will help you to know.

Good luck to you; this is an important purchase, and you are wise to research it as you are!
