New Pocket Coil Base Needed?

Hello TMU members!

New member and first time poster here!

Let me first say that I have been researching mattresses for some time now. The mattress I used to have was bought in 2013 was the Serta iSeries “Applause I” I believe. Not sure which model it was as I’ve seen the “Applause 2” available as well. Anyways, after years of back and shoulder ache, the wife and I came to the conclusion that we needed a new mattress. Unfortunately for her, I want to be completely and utterly sure of something I am purchasing, especially something as costly as a brand new mattress, so I take my time in finding something that would be prefect for the both of us.

Upon my journey down the rabbit hole, I stumbled upon a video by Ken at Arizona Premium Mattress. He was essentially ripping open an iSeries bed that was much similar to mine! I found this intriguing as I was also interested in what I had been sleeping on for the better part of 7 years. I noticed that it was mostly polyfoam and became both saddened and angry that companies charge so much for something so poorly constructed. I noticed in the video he suggested that the Hybrid pocket coil base that belonged to the iSeries was still in decent condition. At the end of the video, he suggested a material that I hadn’t even thought of purchasing because it was out of my price range, and that was: LATEX. He recommended putting a layer of latex on top of the pocket coil. After watching this video, I thought, “what the hell” and started slicing open my Applause while researching my fair share of latex toppers. I eventually found my way to the hybrid pocket coil base and noticed that it was still RATHER level and in good condition. I heard this is the part of the bed that receives the least wear and tear. Because I am on a budget, I thought I could order a few latex toppers, place them on top of my hybrid pocket coil, and have a “brand new” bed! After a few days of researching toppers, I settled on buying 3 2-inch Certified Organic Dunlop toppers…a firm, medium, and soft from Amazon with the intention of returning the odd one out. I read that 4 inches of latex is sufficient for a DIY build. After about a week of waiting for our toppers, they finally arrived and we threw medium on top of firm, which is on top of our old iSeries hybrid pocket coil base of course. The first night, I felt an ENORMOUS difference and noticed my neck and shoulder pain decrease immensely. I am on sleeping on latex and never turning back! Lol

This brings me to my question for all of you…I have noticed that my side of the bed is somewhat softer than my wife’s side. There is VERY SLIGHT but noticeable “dip” when you roll from one side to the other. I am wondering if this is because the coils on my side are more worn than her side because of weight distribution. I realize that this isn’t the biggest deal, but will this be detrimental to my newly acquired latex toppers? Will this cause my latex toppers to develop some kind of “dip” down the road? With this new discovery, I’ve begun digging on potential pocket coil bases if I were to purchase a brand new one. Would you recommend doing so after noticing that my 7 year old base isn’t in the most optimal condition? The ones I’ve been looking at are Legget and Platt since I read those are usually king when it comes to pocket coil bases. At the moment, I am seriously considering the Bolsa or the Caliber Edge. The Quantum Edge Elite sounds very interesting since the dip that I’ve noticed is around my hip area, but I’m not sure my wife would like the zoning. Would anybody have any recommendations based on the information given? I am about 5’9 180lbs and the wife is about 5’3 120lbs. We have a Queen sized mattress and are primarily side sleepers who transition to sleeping on our backs throughout the night. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Looking forward to seeing some answers. I can’t really help you unfortunately but I know that I’ve read a lot of reviews of people complaining about these “zoned” coils so make sure you talk to an “expert” about that. The thing that concerns be about the zones is…wouldn’t zones be different for people based on how tall you are and how big your mattress is? For example, I’m 5’5 but I’m in a Cal King bed. Would the zoning be in the proper locations for me in a longer mattress such as the Cal King? Anyhow…good luck!

Thanks for your response! Yeah, that’s one thing I was wondering too. The sectioning when it came to the zones. It definitely seems like an interesting concept though, considering my hips feel like they are the heaviest part of my body when I am lying down!

You might want to consider latex. I’ve been working with Ken at Arizona Premium Mattress (he’s an expert member on here) and it is more affordable then I thought. Also, if you decide to do a Hybrid I don’t think you’ll need zones with their Quantam Elite Bolsa Pocketed Coils. He is super helpful…so consider reaching out to him. My hips are definitely my heaviest part! lol.
