Newbie with old questions - replacing a king with a split King?

My wife and I enjoyed our king bed, but the “Simmons Simcrest” mattress is 19 years old and we assume it needs replacement. We are in our late 70s. As people sometimes do, I got all excited about this and almost bought a mattress on-line today after just a few hours research. ("Sale ends soon!) I’ve now slapped some sense into myself and will do my homework first. Family members have bought Helix and Saatva beds on-line in the past, and had positive experiences, FWIW.

Wife and I are enthusiastic about buying an adjustable bedframe! We each have some aches and pains (her upper back and shoulders, my lower back) and each have medical issues. We want split bed so that we can each deal with our needs. So I guess we want to buy two Twin XL mattresses and two bases.

In our travels we’ve slept in a lot of strange beds, and we both need firm support. Neither ever enjoyed our experiences with foam beds, or even mattress toppers. So I guess we want a traditional bed of mostly steel coils. The few times we shopped for beds we found little value in lying down on a floor model for 5 minutes. Yeah, once or twice something may have been immediately obvious, but I guess the only real test is spending the night on one!

It seems Helix and Saatva have good return policies on mattresses but not bases, so maybe I try a mattress first on my existing bedframe and then order adjustable bases only once I’m happy with the mattress?
Please share tips and past experiences…

Buy mattress first….then base. I have an adjustable base from Mattress Firm

I would definitely check out Aireloom Preferred Luxetop M1/M2 in firm/plush (4 mattreses). Also check out Aireloom Streamline series.

I compared a $37K ViSpring against Aireloom M1 Firm. I liked Aireloom better!!!
