Hi Snagged,
The first place to start your research is the mattress shopping tutorial here (there is a longer and a shorter version) which has all the basic information, steps, and guidelines that can help you make the best possible choice in any budget range … and perhaps most importantly know how and why to avoid the worst ones.
Just as the title says, I’ve done a little research on this matter but want to make sure I’m not wasting a bunch of money on something isn’t worth it. I’m looking to get a queen size bed. I would like to have the bed raised up off the floor a good bit as I like to sleep a bit higher from the ground than normal. I have been looking at the bed risers things for $20 dollars but they all seem like they are cheaply made and will break. Ones like these:
www.amazon.com/Home--Adjustable-Risers-8...&keywords=Bed+risers
www.amazon.com/Wood-Lifters-Mahogany-4-2...&keywords=Bed+risers
Are there any good bed risers out there worth the money that can lift the bed higher in the air?
I don’t have any personal experience with using bed risers so I don’t know which ones would be stronger than any of the others but a forum search on “risers” (you can just click the link) will bring up a few posts with some sources for them (although you’ve probably seen most of them). Which type of riser would work best would also depend on the type of bedframe that you are using.
3. I’m not looking to spend a lot of money on this. i would like to get the mattress and box springs to my door for $500 to $600. Less would be better of course though.
4. Where is a good online site to order a bed from?
The tutorial includes two links to lists of some of the better online options that I’m aware of (in the optional online step) and posts #3 and #4 here and post #4 here also include some of the better lower budget online choices I’m aware of as well.
Only you can feel what you feel on a mattress and there are too many unknowns, variables, and personal preferences involved for anyone to be able to recommend or suggest a specific mattress or manufacturer based on specs (either yours or a mattress), health conditions, individual circumstances, or “theory at a distance” (see mattress firmness/comfort levels in post #2 here).
There is more about the different ways to choose a mattress (either locally or online) that can help you make the most suitable choice and identify and minimize the risks involved with each of them in post #2 here.
There is more information about the different types of support systems that are generally suitable for different types of mattresses and some sources for each of them in the foundation post here.
I came across these on Overstock.com and was wondering if they were any good:

I weigh about 175 lbs. if that matters. Let me know if I left out any important info you should know.
In terms of quality and durability a mattress is only as good as its construction and the quality and durability of the materials inside it (regardless of the manufacturer) and without knowing the specifics of all the layers and components inside a mattress (see this article) it’s not possible to make any meaningful comments about the quality or durability of any mattress. Having said that … I would tend to avoid all the major brands such as Serta or any mattress that has more than “about an inch or so” of either lower quality or unknown materials inside it because this would likely be a weak link in the mattress and it would be much more likely that the materials in the mattress would soften or break down or start sagging prematurely (see the guidelines here).
There is more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase that can help you make more meaningful comparisons between mattresses in post #13 here.
There is more information about sheets and bedding in post #7 here and the other posts and sources of information it links to that should be helpful
