NY mattress buyer/side sleeper shoulder pain

Hi all,

I’m in the market for a mattress–I’m 6’1" 160 and my partner is 5’6" 130 and we are both primarily side sleepers. I’m leaning towards a flobeds Vzone mattress but haven’t had any experience on a Talalay latex mattress before so am a little nervous, primarily about it being too bouncy and motion transfer issues.

Does anyone know any stores in the NYC area where I could try something comparable? I’ve been to The Clean Bedroom and tried the Obasan Deluxe bed which was quite comfortable but that is an all Dunlop mattress. I would consider the Obasan but at ~6k and no returns and minimal exchange options it seems maybe not worth it/risky.

I often wake up with shoulder pain and occasionally hip pain so am excited to find some relief! Am totally open to other options as well although Flobeds seemed like it had a good balance of price/customization etc.

Thanks!

Hi willwillwill,
And welcome to TMU, glad to have you here.

I know in shelton Ct, you have trusted member Custom Sleep Technology. They specialize in all talalay mattress systems.
CST

@CST is about an hour and twenty five minutes from the city. They site is awesome. In the meanwhile you can peruse and gather some ideas.

I just saw your post as i was shutting down for the evening. We can pick it up again tomorrow and talk about your shoulder issues.

Some of our Trusted members such as @FloBeds ship across the USA and offer nice trials.

All the best,

Norm

Hi Norm,

Thanks for your reply!

I live in upstate NY (and occasionally in the city) so not sure I’ll be able to get to Connecticut soon but I will look into it…

I’ll continue perusing though and see what I come up with. With the current sale, Flobeds is a good deal cheaper than CST hence my leaning in that direction.

Given the shoulder pain issues, was there something that particularly came to mind?

Also, I was recently given a pretty much brand new Dux Latex topper that I haven’t tried yet but I’m not sure if adding something like that to a custom zoned bed like Flobeds or CST would be counteractive…any thoughts on that?

Thanks again!!

Hello willwillwill,
Welcome to TMU!

Regarding adding a topper to a zoned bed - we sell many zoned beds with toppers and it does not impact the zoning.

We are in the city - if it is ever convenient for you to come by, we are open 7 days a week.

Hey Will,

Woke up on the middle of the night banging my head around upstate new york. You may want to check out Jamestown Mattress they multiple locations just west of the upstate area. They are a sister/brother (family) company to @DLX mattress but offer all latex versions of a couple of mattresses. So if you cannot get back into the city to @TheCleanBedroom, perhaps you can check Jamestown out if you have not already. Customsleeptech.com, may still be an option, not sure how convenient the ride across the state line is for you.

I would say Jamestown designs are more straightforward, on paper anyway, vs. the more luxurious appeal of obsasan, but if you find something that fits your budget and PPP’s that provides long-term stability, it can be a winner. Many trusted members have hidden gems throughout their lines/companies. Plus with the new year upon us, they want to move inventory. Worth investigating!

Regarding your side sleeper shoulder pain. I am a pillow nut, neck and shoulder pain causes me to point towards the pillow. If a pillow/s is mismatched to your head height from the mattress position, and not properly mated with the firmness level of the mattress system, with regard on how you sleep (surface of the mattress vs. sunk into the mattress) shoulder issues will develop. I look at the pillow as a mini mattress for the head. A lot a sensitivity up there in and around the brain. You need a supportive pillow that is right for you and the system you are sleeping on!

Happy New Year

Norm

Hi Norm,

Sorry for the late reply and thank you for kindly looking into this. Jamestown Mattress is almost 6hrs away from unfortunately (NY is a big state!) but I did manage to try out an all Talalay Berkely Ergonomics mattress at Scott Jordan Furniture in Brooklyn. I found the Talalay style is too bouncy for my taste and has too much potential for motion transfer. I quite liked the Deluxe Obasan mattress at The Clean Bedroom but the price is just a bit too high for me.

I’m leaning towards keeping the Saatva Loom & Leaf I bought just before finding out about you good folks at The Mattress Underground as it has alleviated some of my shoulder pain and my partner and I have been sleeping well on it. I know there are some concerns about the density about its bottom layers but given that my partner and I are lower BMI, I’m optimistic it won’t be too much of an issue.

I am interested about your thoughts on pillows, however. I’ve also gone through phases of trying tons of pillows and have never really found one that really suits me. At the moment, I sleep on a shredded latex nest bedding pillow with very little fill stacked with a cheap pillow from target on top. I’ve never found one single pillow that properly suits my needs. Curious if you have any good recommendations or suggestions, I have a relatively long neck but not super wide shoulders.

Thanks again!

Will

Hey Will,
Yes NY is a big state. I live in NJ, so I get it.
Pillows, wow. Ok. I am not a big fan of tempurpedic mattresses, but I love their pillows. I probably have almost every version they make. The only one I did not bother to get was their newer shredded foam pillow. I am not a huge fan of shredded foam pillows in general, but I do make exceptions.

From Tempurpedic, I think their TP Procloud Line is their best all around pillows. The TP PC Hi is my personal choice as I have wider shoulders at 6’ and it is gusseted, a feature that I like in a pillow. I do stack it on top of a TP soft and conforming pillow. I have since changed my pillow again as I never stop looking for a better set up. Here it comes. I bought two Italian Blonde Horsehair pillows from Italy. OMG, for me it is awesome. I use one stacked on that same TP soft and conforming. I now have 3 Horsehair pillows. One just horsehair. A second, I created myself. I took the extra kg of horsehair I ordered from Italy (I thought the pillow might not be lofty enough, so I ordered extra, since shipping alone is $55) and I filled a nice 100% zippered cotton pillow liner with the HH, then I filled another liner with the extra fill that Brooklyn Bedding sent me (from their shredded foam pillow 1/2 memory and 1/2 latex foam combo pillow). I inserted both chambers into a @BioSleepConcept pillow cover Iris Pillow Cover. This cover is awesome as it masks any lumps or unevenness from the HH and shredded foam. This pillow is kind of cool, one side very soft and head cradling, the other side firm and responsive when I sleep on my back. Ok enough about me.

Depending on your needs and sleep position and the amount of loft you need. The TP pillow will sink and cradle your head and neck with amazing support, but soft like a cloud. You would just need to pick from Hi, mid or lo. I would buy on Amazon as you can return there. On the TP site, I would only buy if they are running their BOGO and you should buy one of each size, Perhaps you may like a mid and your partner may like lo, or hi. You and your partner would probably do better with the lo or mid, due to the narrow shoulders.

Another pillow which another TMU sleeper uses is the Majestic pillow. It is a high end contour pillow, with 3 chambers that are removable to adjust for loft.

Another pillow that has piqued my curiosity is by @CozyPure. They have a unique LaNoodle pillow. Actually, a couple of versions. Their unique way of shredding their latex for the pillow, is quite different than any other. They all have zippers for adjusting the fill. One is a two sided pillow for different feels. It was described to me that the “noodle” fill cradles your head and neck as the noodles displace themselves when your head lays on them. This is my next pillow adventure, although if I buy another pillow, my wife will just go ballistic on me, as we have no more room for another pillow in this house. But I really want to try one of these bad boys. They make great mattress toppers too. This would be a great pillow for you as you can adjust the loft and you don’t have wide shoulders.

As you know there are hundreds of pillow choices out there. With narrower shoulders, you just dont want to go too lofty as you dont want to angle your neck up too much. I tend to prefer solid fill pillows verses shredded, but my horsehair provide such a unique sleep experience, they are hard to describe. They are just not anything you would expect, but do lean toward the firm side. TP’s are not adjustable, but dont need to be, they are just soft but supportive. My take on the pillow is they are mini mattresses for your head. They need to provide comfort and support.

Keep in mind any shredded pillow needs to have the right cover on with the correct material to handle removing or adding fill so the fill doesnt flatten out the pillow to an unusable flat tire.

Let me know what you think!

thanks so much for the detailed response, norm!
comically, i have had a similar argument about too many pillows in the closet with my partner haha.

i may have been under estimating my shoulder width as i just measured and it’s about 6.5" – if i went with the TP pillow would you then recommend the High model? they are indeed having their BOGO sale so maybe worth getting a combo. one other Q is if you have any problems with heat with that pillow…i see they have other models that specialize in cooling. i don’t sleep particularly hot but i know that can be an issue with mem foam.

the horsehair thing is fascinating, i’ll have to look into that but i probably don’t want to dish out for it if it’s very pricey.

Hi will,

At 6.5" i would definitely go with the tp procloud hi. Personally, i dont find it hot at all, but that is just me. The cover is a cooling knit, but IMO, those cooling knits dont do much for more than 10-15 minutes. If TP is on sale and you dont mind taking the chance, they are very comfortable pillows. Like a talalay latex softness, without the bounce back, but more support. Really like resting on a cloud. It seems to know the weight of your head and cuddles it just the right amount.

My adult daughters love them. After staying here on a trip home independent of each other, both coincidentally took pictures of the law label and asked me what pillows they were and where to get them. One happened to be the procloud mid and the other the dual breeze.
So $300 later, 1 dual breeze from Amazon to Florida and 2 procloud mids from TP -BOGO to California.

Crazy how that happens. They wont spend the money after they sleep on a pillow they just discovered was super comfortable, but proceede to get dad to spend it. :money_mouth_face:

Good luck with them!
