Odors - ODors - ODOrs....almost have given up trying to find a mattress/topper

Hi Everyone. First time poster, avid reader. I don’t know that I have MCS, however, in some of my readings, it appears that my issues often overlap with these folks. I am writing in the hopes that someone can guide me to a true answer for where to buy a mattress or topper that doesn’t cause their throat to burn/eyes to swell/supreme sinus congestion every morning? I don’t understand where this issue began happening and am furious with the industry for their apparent inability to deal with this issue. This arduous journey for me began about 10 years ago when we finally decided to go mattress shopping after our original mattress had pretty much given up on all areas of support. Ever since then, I have invested 10s of thousands of dollars in an effort to simply sleep comfortable without the aforementioned issues with smell/odors. My travails have run the gamut between synthetic/natural/organic and every certification known to man, without success. I am convinced that the “bed in a box” industry might need to go by the wayside - because they seem to either be ignorant or dumbfounded as to why the process of pressure rolling these beds up into a swiss cake roll format lends to such malodorous formations even in the most eco sensitive brands. I need someone who has walked in my shoes to PLEASE turn me onto something that will likely give me a quality night of sleep.

Hi f3dUPwithMattressMellz.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Has your issue been primarily with foams (memory and/or latex)? Or has it extended to other natural fibers as well (wool, down, cotton, bamboo, etc)?

As you likely already know, all new mattresses are going to come with some odor but that odor should dissipate relatively quickly. Are you finding that your toppers/mattresses are “off-gassing” for more than 4 weeks?

Most of those bed in a box manufacturers will always be using either poly foam or memory foam or both. For someone such as yourself I would be avoiding these materials entirely. Then the issue becomes what materials don’t bother you? Latex? Cotton? Wool? Etc Once you know what you can use (likely a hybrid design but not sure if spring pocketing would also cause issues) then you can start to look at who manufactures using your preferred materials to get something that works for you.
