Old-fashioned traditional memory foam toppers - a thing of the past?

Hi TMU! Thanks for having this space and community! It’s helped my sanity through some tough sleeping times.

Since last writing, I had been able to find a stable, not injurious DIY mattress situation for a while, but my top comfort layer (a 2 inch 3lb memory foam topper many years old) has finally died. I’m having a lot of trouble finding new toppers that are “old-fashioned” memory foam where it feels like you are lying “in” the bed and being held in one place. I’ve read the old topper guidance here and I see many toppers (including the one I used to have) with re-configured formulas. I’ve watched video reviews where people push on the toppers and there is basically no imprint as they spring magically back into place in a second. Apparently, it’s the trend now to have memory foam that immediately bounces back because people don’t like feeling “stuck” in the bed. But, that’s exactly what I’m looking for! I’ve been on this journey with my back/nerve damage for a very long time and tried lots of options and a soft “traditional-feeling” memory foam topper is what has worked really well for me in the past. I weigh 145, but I’m a little gangly and long, so toppers that are too firm and pushy for the force I can exert have also been an issue (e.g., the Tempurpedic).

Any suggestions of traditional-feeling memory foam toppers that still exist out there or places to look? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!! I’m hoping for some pain-free sleep again soon.

Great to hear that you found "a stable, not injurious DIY mattress situation “at least for a while before your 2” memory foam topper decided to give up. :ohmy:

There are many Memory Foam suppliers that still provide traditional memory foam that is not fast responsive. A fast look at our Trusted members of the site we found these that may stir your interest.

• You may want to consider the Sculpted 5 zoned Ghost Bed Mattress Topper: CertiPUR-US® Cooling Gel Memory Foam Topper | GhostBed® with a washable cover. It looks like overall foam density as is (which includes the sculped patterns) is around 3.6 lbs. which means that the foam density is a little higher than that. For all intents and purposes, I’d say around 4lbs/cuft which for your BMI would work well in terms of durability and useful life. If you find it to be too soft with the pattern up you can always turn it the other way around. The peaks and valleys are designed to promote some airflow for a bit of temperature reduction.

If durability is one of your criteria, whatever you chose, I’d always make sure that you find out the mattress information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the mattress durability guidelines here

Now I may be wrong here but it sounds like the OP is looking for a LATEX topper opposed to a MEMORY FOAM topper.

Think you may be misinterpreting the post… @Mia12345 seems to be looking for classic memory foam toppers with a slow response, as opposed to latex or some of the more responsive memory foam formulations.

Thanks TMU! Thanks Sweet Dreams, yes, I did mean I was seeking a memory foam topper. I find latex is way too bouncy for me and I just love the feeling of memory foam. Apologies for the delayed response as I wanted to start researching these a bit.

  1. GhostBed: This certainly looks appealing! I can’t find any video reviews, so it’s hard to get a sense and they don’t offer returns. I can reach out to them to learn more.
  2. LumaSleep: I really don’t like the feel of latex :frowning:
  3. Magic Sleeper: I’m not sure about convoluted, but can reach out to learn more.
  4. Malouf: This one looked really great, but I received a very helpful though disheartening response when I asked about its feel: " If you’re looking for something that feels like Gen I memory foam, those were slower in recovery and commonly had density ranges from 5-7 pounds. This topper is not that style. The newer generation of memory foam has gone to faster recovery and lower density to improve responsiveness and also to increase airflow - two common complaints about memory foam. I’m sure there are still producers of this style of memory foam, but I’m unaware of any off the top of my head."

I do find this comment very validating to my experience searching for toppers though! Unfortunate to be in the minority, never having had those complaints about memory foam personally. Hopefully, there are still producers of that style of memory foam out there!

Mia12345 Did you decide on a topper? Wondering how it’s working out.

I don’t like the feel of latex either and after sinking a lot of $$ into a latex mattress and then a convoluted latex topper, I’m now looking for a quality memory foam topper.

I’ve tried gel foam toppers (about 5 different ones) from Amazon because they can be returned, none are of high quality to prevent eventual sagging after a few nights.

I’m looking at GhostBed as well but over $400 and not returnable, I’m reluctant without reviews specifically for their toppers.
