OMI Terra vs. Nest Bedding (OMI) vs. SMC HighLands

I bought Seattle Mattress Company’s Highlands line mattress in 2013. It was a split king with a support of 36 ILD Dunlop and a comfort layer of 19 ILD made of Talalay.

Around 2019, the mattress started feeling unsatisfactory in terms of its overall support. Instead of replacing the whole, we replaced the comfort layer with a single King piece made of 28 ILD Talalay. So now the support core was a 2013 split-king Dunlop 36 ILD, and the comfort layer was a single piece King 28 ILD Talalay.

This worked fine for a while, but with time I realized that this setup was a bit too aggressive for my back.

In 2013, I was primarily a stomach/back sleeper. Now, I’m primarily a back/side sleeper - so things change. The mattress has probably also changed/degraded with time, although I can’t be sure how much that really matters.

I’ve been researching alternatives, and here are the three primary options l have.

  • OMI Terra
  • Nest Bedding’s OMI Latex
  • Another made-to order custom latex mattress

Reading previous posts here, I think OMI Terra’s comfort layer is a 25 ILD convoluted layer, and its support layer is bit more complicated (a 3" 35 ILD core sandwiched between a 2" 25 ILD outer layer on either side?).

The Nest Bedding seems to be a 36 ILD support layer, and a 19-22 ILD comfort layer.

Clearly, the ILD’s alone aren’t comparable 1:1 between mattresses for “feel”, because otherwise the mattress I used to have in 2013 would be similar to Nest’s OMI Latex mattress - but that’s far from what my try-outs suggest.

Experientially, Nest Bedding OMI is similar to the mattress we already own. Nest Bedding store in Seattle told us that they have a “soft” comfort layer (not advertised on their website) that could be a better option than “medium”.

I like the OMI Terra the best, and I’ve tried it out twice now - and every time it feels amazing. Both in terms of its support level and how well it forms to my body (as well as that of my spouse) its pretty great. It’s pricey, and I’m having a hard time believing that this level of price-premium has to be paid to get this experience/feel, but if it comes down to it and we can’t replicate the same feeling, we’ll probably just buy OMI Terra.

So I’m looking for ideas here. What other mattresses should we try, or what combination of latex type/densities should be try out to replicate the feel of Terra - before giving up and just buying it?

I want to thank contributors/responders in advance. This forum has been a huge source of education for me and I consider it an important reason why I’ve become healthier (back pain) over time - Thanks!

BTW, we recently stayed at a hotel where the bed felt great. I think they had an innerspring mattress, but we couldn’t quite puzzle out what brand it was from the label. My back certainly felt better and I could tell that there was improve pressure relief without compromising support. This is what got us thinking about whether our current mattress needed improving/changing and we decided that the answer was indeed yes, we needed a change.

Here is the label we found at the hotel.

Corsicana is the brand of that mattress (https://www.corsicanamattress.com/), and the specific model is 2104MFD-1050 as indicated on the tag. It seems likely that their models and branding have changed since 03/2015 when that mattress was manufactured, but they may be able to provide you with more details about its construction or what model in their current lineup it would be most similar to.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! I contacted them but they told me to reach out to a Mattress Firm (https://www.mattressfirm.com/) store find out more. I’ll call one to see if I can learn more about that Corsicana mattress, but I’m not holding out much hope.
