Hello,
I am 5’8", 145lbs and in a unique situation looking for a new mattress as the current queen sized mattress I am sleeping on is sagging severely:
I am subletting an apartment temporarily, and will likely be here for only 1-2 years more. The apartment is furnished and I will probably leave the mattress here when I leave, and therefore do not want to invest heavily into it (<$500).
The apartment is in a 6th-floor walk-up in New York. In the interest of moving the mattress up into the apartment, a bed-in-a-box option is preferred.
Before moving, I used to sleep on a SleepOnLatex medium (which was quite firm) with a 2-inch topper. The two inches ended up being too soft for my taste and I wished I had got a 1-inch topper, but it was fine. I liked latex.
TL;DR:
I’m looking for a queen-sized mattress at or under $500, and prefer latex.
Here are the options I’ve been considering:
Walmart’s Brooklyn Bedding Standard Hybrid (10", $218), which uses 8" 840 Pocket Coils and a small amount of foam + 2 inch soft SleepOnLatex topper with jersey cover ($209) = $427
Same thing as above, but with Ikea Vesteroy ($299) instead of BB Standard = $508
SleepEZ Essentials Latex, foam + latex = $399
Engineered Sleep Today mattress (no latex, but often recommended and the lowest effort option) = $479
Has anyone tried a similar setup or slept on any of these mattresses? I am curious about your experience. If not, any opinions between these or other mattresses I’m not considering?
I totally get not wanting to sink too much into a bed you may not even take with you - that makes perfect sense given your situation. Both SleepEZ and Engineered Sleep are great, reputable options in that price range, but from what you’ve described, I think the SleepEZ Essentials setup will likely be the more comfortable choice overall.
It’ll get you that latex feel you already know you like, and the mixed foam-and-latex design should give you a nice balance of support and pressure relief without feeling overly soft or “stuck.” Engineered Sleep is solid too, but the Essentials setup seems like it’ll land closer to your preferences and what’s worked for you in the past.
Thank you for the suggestions, I did go with the SleepEZ Essentials Latex and I’m very happy with it. The fulfillment was quick and it arrived a few days after placing the order. For anyone else with stairs, I would highly recommend having someone help you, but I was able to manage carrying the box up solo. It’s been a massive upgrade in sleep quality; I wake up feeling a lot better. The mattress is similar in firmness and comfort to the SleepOnLatex medium that I had before moving. I may consider a 1-inch soft topper at some point in the future for better alignment when sleeping on my side, but I’m very satisfied with it as-is for now.
