Ordered an Urban Mattress Maple after much research

Ah, a forum instead of InstaFace.

A bit of history for why I’m here. Wifey and I moved around Austin for a decade and swapped the mattresses we had when we moved in together (MattressFirm Whatevers) for an early Purple Hybrid in 2020. We liked it… but right after that I learned about the fiberglass issue. Last year we moved in with family in Colorado and have spent the year sleeping on a probably old and definitely junky thing that would make everyone here’s skin crawl. Being me, I went and tried to research everything.

I had assumed (for two years at least) that we’d get an Avocado. Then I started reading more this past month and thought maybe a Saatva. Or a Nolah Evolution 15. But everything seemed to be getting shilly reviews or bad (or at least very mixed reviews). And because we’re moving to a new (to us) (rental) house, I needed it delivered on a certain day, not “in a couple of weeks, -ish”. Then… then I started finding out how they were the same company, and the local Urban Mattress was a great local store instead of a lame house brand.

The only guidance I had from wifey is that she really likes the Westin Heavenly (she also has no interest in lying on a mattress for five minutes to try to figure out of it will work, which I understand). Of course, they don’t give much detail, but foam over springs. She also hates smells and I of course also wanted natural materials, so that worked out. After going back and forth between the Maple and the Oak, I could actually tell the Maple was more supportive with the extra latex, so I went with that in firm. As a side benefit, being zippable, the extra height means more flexibility to adjust it if wifey doesn’t like it. I did get a latex topper from SOL (on now) and the microcoil from… ok Saatva arriving Tuesday to try out, and also have some tweaking options.

Then on more reading I discovered the medium Maple was probably better, so I called Urban Mattress and they just changed the order (confirming it’s more popular for side sleepers) and also repeated they’d swap the springs within 100 days if we wanted. They’ve been great throughout. I even work on a website and showed them a few breaks on theirs.

Once we get moved in I will probably get a basic Elm for guests and put the extra toppers on it.

I’ll also report what I feel about the mattress after sleeping on it, but it must be better than the thing we’re on now.

Apologies for the loooong post that isn’t as organized as I’d like.

Hi Toby.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum. We’re glad you like the change of scenery away from social media.

Thanks for sharing your history and the purchase! And hey, no shame in the junky-make-your-skin-crawl-game. We’ve all slept on one of those.

I think your post really demonstrates the importance of taking time, doing research, and in-person testing where possible. Bravo!

Looking forward to your update. I hope it works out and you both find yourselves very happy with it.

Thanks! I should add, she did say the 2" Medium latex topper was much nicer than the bed was before, so I assume she’ll like the feel when it’s built in. Can’t wait.

I meant to update when we got the Maple, but it was hectic and now we have two weeks of feedback on it.

Wholly carp that is a comfortable mattress! It is immediately comfortable lying down, changes not a whit by the morning, and keeps me asleep for like an extra half hour or more per night. The even-bigger trial was we spent the weekend at the Westin Avon, and the Heavenly was a noticeable downgrade: dead-feeling and unsupportive. Coming back home last night felt so much better. Mission accomplished.
