Organic mattresses???

I would like to purchase a queen size organic mattress. Any advise about where and which type to purchase would be much appreciated.

Hi carmela,

Your question is too broad and there are too many unknowns, variables, and preferences involved in a mattress choice for anyone to provide any meaningful or specific advice about “what” mattress to buy but the first place to start your research is the tutorial post here which has all the basic information, steps, and guidelines that can help you make the best possible choices … and know how to avoid the worst ones.

There are also many types of so called “organic” mattresses depending on what type of material you prefer and the type of organic certifications that are important to you but if you are looking for a mattress that is certified “as a mattress” rather than a mattress that “contains” organic materials then there are only a few manufacturers that make them and they tend to be quite costly (these include Naturepedic, Organicpedic, and Savvy Rest’s wool mattress). Mattresses that are certified organic would generally have some combination of organic natural fibers (wool cotton etc), innersprings, or organic Dunlop latex. You will also find many mattresses that have “organic” in their name that have organic covers or quilting but the material inside the cover is not organic. There is more about organic certifications in post #2 here.

If you are looking for a mattress that uses either some or all organic components (regardless of whether the mattress itself is certified “as a whole” as organic) then you would have more options yet.

If you are looking for 100% natural materials and the actual organic certification doesn’t matter to you as much then you would have more options yet (at lower cost because the organic certification adds to the cost of a material even if there is no difference in the quality or safety of the material itself).

I would also be aware that “organic” and “safe” may not be the same thing and if safety is your main priority rather than the certification of the farming methods or production methods that were used to produce the materials then you would have more options yet. There is more about mattress safety that can help each person answer the question of “how safe is safe enough for me?” in post #2 here and the other posts and sources of information it links to.
