Organic Wool Claims

TMU serves the community as consumer advocates as well as promoters of good businesses, which is why most of us are here and feel free/comfortable to share our mattress experiences. So, I am compelled to share today’s unexpected discovery … a certain mattress company (you may/may not know which I’m referring to as you read) on the TMU membership list claims that their 100% organic cotton knit cover is quilted to 100% organic wool (batting) from a certain producer/supplier of that wool (names I can reveal upon TMU approval). However, after a casual request for the certifications this morning because the wool cert wasn’t on the websites (mattress co’s/supplier’s), the supplier asked for the mattress company’s name and subsequently informed me that they did not provide that company with any organic wool.

Confused, I called the mattress company to check if there was some kind of miscommunication. The mattress company rep told me that they deal with the owner of that supplier and could put me in touch with him.

Confident, I went back to the person I had been in contact at the wool company with that information but once again that person said there was little the owner could do to help with this situation because it turns out that this person is the one in their company that heads their Certified Organic program and that the mattress company indeed does not purchase their certified organic wool from them.

Again, I contacted the mattress company, this time via email by replying to an existing email that contained a quote so I have everything in writing; I reported back to them the information I was told by the supplier. In all my previous exchanges with the mattress company, they have been great at responding promptly but this time I had not heard back from them. Closer towards but a couple hours before the end of business day, I tried reaching out to follow up via their Live Chat (how I usually get in touch) but when I checked back not long after the Live Chat was disabled. I was at work so I wasn’t able to call them right away but when I could manage it, they were closed.

Perhaps it’s just all a coincidence and I will diligently follow up since they seem like reputable company and would uphold their good business practice (as they have until now, or so it seems). I will update you all on what happens.

Anyone else ever had a similar experience? Any feedback or suggestions is always appreciated.

Hi wenisleep,

I understand your concerns with wanting to be accurate and complete with your statements, and I appreciate that. Go ahead and PM me with the information you’re attempting to acquire and let me see what I can find out for you.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

Right, that and I just needed to confirm the wool is organic especially if we’re spending the extra hard earned money for it. Between the time I wrote on TMU and now, I reached out to the mattress company via Live Chat again and they said they are waiting for the owner to come in and awaiting information from him/them regarding my inquiries. We are really trying to commit to reducing our carbon footprint and look for more humane, sustainable and green alternatives. I didn’t realize it was so complicated. Will keep posted and PM you. Thanks for understanding and your kind offer to help out where you can.

Hi wenisleep,

OK, I’ll look for your PM.

The aims of GOTS 5.0

are listed in section 1.1. Regarding all of the things you mentioned as concerns, there are wool providers who are not organic certified who can offer products to similar or even higher standards (example here).

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

Hadn’t had a chance yet to PM you with all the info but will do as soon I get the chance. Update will be provided; and I noticed that they changed their website to reflect an accurate description of what customers will be getting when they order their “organic” mattresses (although haphazardly because there are still some “organic wool” wording) including coincidentally the Eco-Wool you referred to in your example. They also took down their GOTS cert (which was illegible) for their organic cotton from Maxime which is something else now to look into. :frowning:
