Original Mattress Factory...Did We Get a Dud or Is This Expected?

After MUCH research and some recommendations on here and other sites, my husband and I purchased a Regency Sapphire (not eurotop) from The Original Mattress Factory and had it delivered 3 weeks ago. We paired it with a 3", 4 lb memory foam topper and have no complaints about comfort so far. The issue is that when on the side of the bed and transitioning from a sleeping to sitting position to standing (or vice versa), I can feel the springs/coils moving underneath me. They make a very slight noise (almost like a VERY faint popping), but are especially noticeable underneath my bottom when “scooting” out of bed. When I mentioned this to my husband the other day, he said he didn’t notice it. I replicated my movements on his side and felt it, and after having him mimic me multiple times he said he could tell what I was talking about, but he hadn’t noticed it on his own before.

Our 7 year-old Serta pillowtop mattress that we put in the guest room was lumpy, but I never noticed this issue with that bed. Is it because perhaps the pillowtop masked the “spring” feel? I am currently 8 months pregnant and about 225 lbs (my husband is about 175 lbs), but I can’t imagine that my weight would affect a brand new mattress THAT much.

I suppose my question is, is feeling a slight movement of springs and faintly hearing them normal for a brand new mattress? Perhaps it is and our old pillowtop just masked it. Or is this a possible issue that could exacerbate over time? I’d hate to call with a warranty complaint, waste our time and theirs, and be told it is perfectly normal. Thanks!

Hi Sapphire1166,

It sounds to me like it could be a result of the deeper compression on the edge of your mattress caused by a combination of more concentrated weight when you are getting up or getting on the mattress, and the type of spring in your mattress (you have an offset coil system which has helical wires that connect the springs together so they move together rather than independently and the wires can rub against each other slightly).

If it only was happening in one part of the mattress and was like the springs were “locked” and then suddenly “give” then it could be a bent wire. Since what you are describing happens on the other side as well then I would say it’s probably “normal”.

If you are in doubt you could go to Original Mattress and see if the same thing happens on one of their floor models in which case I would certainly call it “normal” and a result of the type of innerspring in your mattress.
