First of all, thanks to this site, we now have our perfect mattress! It wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t found this site, because I was looking at all the big brand names, and trying to decide between them, but was frustrated by all the reviews from people who spent a lot of money on a mattress, and ended up unhappy. We didn’t mind spending the money, IF we knew we’d get a mattress we’d be satisfied with for quite some time!
The Magic Sleeper store in Pottstown PA was recommended to us, and even though it’s a 2 hr. drive from here, that’s where we decided to go this past summer, and had an amazing experience! The store is very unassuming from the outside, and nothing fancy inside either, but I personally liked the “warehouse” atmosphere of it.
We had pretty much decided we wanted a latex mattress, but needed to try one out to make sure we liked the feel, and to choose a firmness. (If we ended up not liking the feel, we knew they could help us figure something else out.) Let me say that I had also decided not to get overwhelmed by all the information out there, and was not going to try and “figure it out” ahead of time, based on our height & weight, sleeping positions, etc. I figured that’s what the experts at the store are there for, and would help us figure it out once we got there, because in my way of thinking, we wouldn’t be able to tell anyway until we tried the mattresses and learned what felt good to us! Sure enough, that’s what happened! One of the owners met with us, and we asked to try the latex first. The one they had set up is the firm one, which is actually a med.-firm, if I remember correctly. We weren’t so much interested in all the technicalities; I knew the research had already been done to determine that their latex is a very good quality, so we were mainly interested in choosing one based on feel! It felt exactly like I was hoping it would- firm & supportive, but with just enough “give” so that it doesn’t feel like laying on a board! He had us try their softer layer- too soft. He also had us try a lot of other types of mattresses, to be able to make comparisons. We felt he was genuinely trying to help us find the mattress that was right for us, and not just sell us their highest-priced one. Everything else we tried felt either too firm or too soft, so we ended up going back to the first latex, the one they make right there, and he even showed us their work area and how the process goes. We ordered the queen size set, and he said we could change out the top layer if we ended up not liking it after we got it home, or even do half & half, if just one of us wanted something different. They just ask that people give it two weeks of sleeping on it, for your body to adjust, before you decide to make any changes.
Well, the process ended up taking a good bit longer than expected, because something they needed for the cover was on backorder for awhile. When it finally came and they called to say it was ready, they also said they would deliver it at no charge because of our inconvenience! So the two brothers who own the store brought it, carried it upstairs to our bedroom, and set it up for us! (It’s very heavy and bulky because of being “floppy”.)
My husband was impressed with it right away. It took me longer, because I work night shift 2-3 nights/wk. so wasn’t using it as much. After having it for a couple months, and being able to compare my sleep quality now with what it had been with our old mattress, (a 13 yr. old innerspring) I see a huge difference! I used to toss & turn during the early morning hours, until it was time to wake up, and then I felt stiff, sore & achy, like I had been beat up! Now, I sleep soundly for much longer periods of time, and wake up without the stiffness & soreness. My husband & I look forward to sleeping on our mattress now, and miss it when we’re not home! It doesn’t look very inspiring- basically a big block of foam with a cover- there’s nothing “cushy” about it, but I love the support of it, even for my lower back, which the old mattress didn’t have, and even if I sleep on my stomach, which I do frequently, in spite of trying hard not to! And I don’t have to worry about finding sheets to fit- it doesn’t need “deep pocket” sheets, but they still work, because I just tuck them in around the mattress, and the weight of it keeps them in place.
I can’t think of anything about it I don’t like! Thanks mattressunderground, and Magic Sleeper!!
Can you please share the name of the mattress you purchased, and if you know this, the specific details of the construction?
Thanks
Hi JJike328,
Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences at Magic Sleeper and most importantly … congratulations on your new mattress ![]()
I think that two of the most important things you did was choose a good retailer/manufacturer to work with and go there without any preconceptions so you could let your testing and your body decide what worked best for you.
I’d say you did well!

Thanks for the review JJike328!
My wife and I thought about going to Magic Sleeper store in Pottstown. It is a little further from us about 3.5 hours so it would be quite the trip down, but it might be worth the trip to find a mattress that works for us. It makes it a little easier when you hear how well of an experience other people have.

Well, it was Magic Sleeper’s 100% latex mattress, with a 6" Dunlop core, and a 2" Talalay top. When we bought it, they were in the process of trying to offer customers more options. I see now when I go to their old website, www.magicsleeper.net, it says at the top, “Welcome, click here to go to our new site”. I haven’t checked that out yet, but if you stay on the old site, and click on “Latex Foam Mattresses”, then go to the list of “all other latex foam mattresses” (not the organic ones) the one we bought is the 5th one down. I’m not completely sure about the firmness. I know it wasn’t the soft one. The owner did give us the ILD #, but to be honest with you, I wasn’t so much interested in that. I just wanted something that felt right for me! Hope this helps.
I was so happy to be able to support their business. They asked how we heard about them, and when I told them, they knew right away what I meant, and remembered speaking extensively to Pheonix. They said they have gotten a lot of business, thanks to this site, which I think is great!
Hi JJike328,
Thanks for the heads up about their new site as well. I’ve added it to the forum lists that include them ![]()

I think your experience was more typical than not! Latex does feel different and it can take some time to adjust.
I’m glad you hung in there to see just how excellent Latex is for resting/sleeping.
Thank you again for an excellent review and your story.
